Why do people cycle through villagers?

I know this is kind of a stupid question
But Honestly I really have no idea why.
If someone would like explain , it will be greatly appreciated! : )

could be a variety of reasons;

-hunting for personal dreamies
-hunting for popular villagers to sell
-for the fun of it
-boredom
-to find out villager's exteriors/interiors (less common as these are now well documented)

I only did it to get through the 16 villager cycle.

How would one go about cycling? I know you should have a second copy of the game to do it, so it doesn't interfere with your main town, but how do people go through that many villagers that fast? My villagers don't really ask me to leave at all, and they're not Amiibo cards I've scanned in.

Because if they lost a villager they really liked they have to cycle through 16 villagers to get them back.
