The next step is that the US & UN will probably slap Russia on the wrists and hopefully put an end to this war. Russia isn't stopping it but fueling it with troops, weapons, half ass training and money. The UN has told Russia not to, but when does Russia ever listen? There will be trials for crimes against humanity and then the news will jump to the next big story.

Well, no ****. Sorry to be blunt, but they have been shooting down planes all week it's kinda obvious.

Ukraine also has wiretap proof that the pro-Russians were talking about it like "Oh damn that wasn't a spy plane that was a commercial plane. Crap"

While some areas of Ukraine were shut down, the area that the plane was shot down from is considered international "Air Space" and was "deemed safe at 32000 feet". The plane was at 33000 feet.

This is why the UN has stepped in.

It's terrible what happened, and it seems it wasn't that they were trying to target the aircraft because it was a commercial liner, but because it was an airplane. This is frightening, if you think about it. These people were unintentional victims of a war that is technically being funded by a nation who is helping the rebel group without fully and completely training them.

While it is unknown who holds responsibility, I think both sides of this war will have to rethink their strategy and even hold an armists like the koreas, if the UN has any say.
