I think it'd be cute if all the NPCs had small little story quests for you to complete so you can find out more about them.

I think it's a good idea to try to give away all villagers before voiding them. Every single villager has a following, and you might just make somebody's day. :)

The problem with tier 5 dreamies is that they tend to get autovoided because few people think they're wanted. No stories for me yet, though I'm sure others will chime in with some. :)

If it does it repeatedly and your game is a physical copy I would still try playing it in another 3DS to see if it's a problem with the game or the console. Hopefully everything is fine, it'd suck to have your town corrupt. :(

Me too! Back in my old New Leaf town she wasn't a starter, but she was the very first move in. I was very happy to see her again among the villagers welcoming me to my new town.
