Most people call those Deserted Island or Nook Mile Islands. They are randomly generated, and usually have either a DIY Recipe, Fossil, and/or Furniture in a tree. And may have restricted spawns, making rare bugs/fish more common.

They are fun to visit. Just be careful in overspending your Nook Miles, because you need them to buy some cool things.

The first few days are probably best experienced on your own, in order to get the best feel for the game. Once you are ready, I will happily play with you.

My own town is coming along nicely, and one of my rooms even looks halfway decent! Still a long way to go to have a properly decorated home, though.
