The golden spade trick is what I said earlier, although you probably missed it:

This worked in Wild World and presumably all the other titles, including New Leaf.

If you have a golden spade, you can bury Bells for the chance of it growing into a money tree. More Bells = higher chance. Well, the smallest amount you can bury is 100 Bells - not much more than a sapling from Lief, and this will give virtually no chance of growing into a money tree. However, it should grow into a regular cedar tree!

If you have a golden spade handy, then give it a go, or ask around to see if anyone has one if you don't. I think you need to donate all the different fossils to the museum now rather than just burying a spade and leaving it overnight, though I'm not sure to be honest.
