I think I know b/c I looked up a few of the characters in the role list, but I don't think people realize what exactly Kira are and how to get rid of them and how the Death Notes play into this.

Also, Death Notes are 1 time uses, right?

Ok, I'll try to make a better explanation

Death notes are basically items that allow players to kill one player each night and can be "transferred" in the ways described in the OP. The deathnotes are not allowed to be held by town-aligned "Anti-Kira" players, but can be held by all other players. Anti-Kira players will destroy any deathnotes that they obtain. The goal of the town is to destroy all of the deathnotes by obtaining and destroying them. They can acquire deathnotes by voting for lynched scum or by killing a Kira member at night who has a deathnote. The Kira group is trying to eliminate the Anti-Kira group and can kill them using their deathnotes.

maybe they haven't seen the anime so they don't really know what your talking about...

Death Notes are a notebook with killing power so its gonna be an item in this mafia game that can be transferred from person to person and then depending on your role is what will happen if and when you get one of the Death Notes. Kira pretty much just means "killer" but you can be either be a good killer or a bad killer. the Shinigami are god/demon like characters where the Death Note notebooks came from and have special abilities... its not that complicated if you've seen the anime, and it seems really fun actually.
