Then u should play Dragon Quest. Spread propaganda for Dragon Quest here. DQ is a super consistent series, and they're all very lighthearted and fun JRPG's that don't take themselves too seriously. They're also not very grindy compared to most JRPG's, and even then grinding is very rewarding when discovering new monsters to add to the bestiary and farming alchemy materials. You can alchemize materials and create new armor and weapons, explore the overworld, sail the oceans Wind-Waker style, and gamble away your money in the casino. There's also no random encounters in the newer games and you can speed up the gameplay to make grinding easier, though grinding is minimal in most of the games. Dragon Quest overall is a relaxing, fun, lighthearted series that really is just JRPG comfort food. Discover new monsters and seeing what ridiculous conflicts happen in each town is super fun and charming.

ALSO EVERY VILLAIN IS JUST STRAIGHT UP AN EVIL ******* AND THERE'S NO FORCED LAME REDEMPTION ARCS!!! (Except DQ 9)


DQ is an extremely underrated series, without DQ we wouldn't have Pokemon, Earthbound, or Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest on the Famicom was the very first JRPG ever. DQ 5 had monster collecting and training years before Pokemon came out, and turn based battles with spells, abilities, and weapons all were started with DQ.


Dragon Quest XI Definitive addition on switch is currently on sale on the Nintendo Eshop so now's the best time to pick it up if you havent done so. I also recommend the Dragon Quest VII and VIII remakes which are both on 3DS eshop, and all of the retro DQ games can be bought on iOS and Android for 10 bucks. Though if you want the DS remakes of the Dragon Quest 4-6 it'll cost you an arm and a leg.


I think DQ 9 on the DS (you'll have to get it on ebay), and DQ 11 on Switch/PC/PS4 are the best games to start with. DQ V is also considered the best in the series by many because of it's super interesting and impactful story.

True! Though XI's music is a little repetitive, the patch to listen to whole series soundtrack 100 percent makes up for it

I mean its just that the series despite being super influential and extremely popular in Japan, has never achieved the same popularity in the west sadly despite being amazing games. Toxic smash fans be like "aNotHer aNiMe swOrD chAracter???".

So yea i wanted to bring some attention to the games, especially since DQ IX Sentinels of the Starry Skies on the DS was a huge part of my childhood.

I don't think Dragon Quest is underrated in Japan- Akira Toriyama is the visdev artist for the whole franchise after all (if you don't know who Akira Toriyama is, he might have written a manga you've heard of.) It's widely speculated that Hero's inclusion in SSBU is almost entirely predicated on the popularity of DQ in Japan.
JRPGs outside of pkmn/digimon and final fantasy have only recently begun to get the respect they deserve in Western gaming spaces so I'd just give it some time. Dragon Quest 11 is really good tho- I'm only like 10 hrs in & read it's like a 60 hr game if you speed thru it and 200 hrs if you take ur time so take my opinion with a grain of salt
I just finished Gallopolis & the prince reminded me of Mr. Satan........ lmaooooo

Yeah a lot of people dont realize this Akira Toriyama's work, ive never been a fan of Dragon Ball really but DQ is great. Theres also a lot of gags and tropes that crossover (puff puff, giant muscle dudes, cutesy characters in bandanas)

I was so happy to see hero, though im a little sad the Hero from DQ9 didnt get in hes my favorite.

I got Dragon Quest 11 last year and fell out of it when other games came out. But now, I've gotten back into and I must say, I really appreciate all the effort they put into this game. The animations, the details, the environments, ALL OF IT. I'm really happy I didn't miss out and I can't wait to finish it.

i haven't played a mainline dragon quest EVER, but i love dq heroes rocket slime really dearly. it's so charming and silly and i love dragon quest's monster designs a lot!!! i adore all the ones with big tongues like goodybag, imp, and mimic. love all the different kinds of slimes too! besides that the only other one i've played is dqm joker and i've never beaten it, it was way too hard for little me and present me still struggles with both the diffculty+getting lost. it's probably not even that hard of a game i don't know why i have such a hard time with it XD

Words cant describe how perfect the dragon quest series is!!
you have Brilliant storytelling with the original jrpg essence of turn base gameplay with the accurate level of difficulty
Then you have Akira toriyama artwork and character design and the besty monsters ever created in a game after pokemon
also, dont forget to enhance the whole experience with Koichi Sugiyama Compositions that are true masterpieces in videogame music history.
Put it all together and you have DRAGON QUEST a recipe that is almost impossible to go wrong

I havent played all the games in the series and for starters i reccomend playing the most recent one DQXI, wich in my opinion is the second best of the series
The 3ds is the best platform to fully enjoy the series... yu can have DQ IV, V, VI, VII and VIII also you have IX almost forgot
Please do yourself a big game favor and play DQVIII someday in your life

I really enjoyed the last Dragon Quest. I typically prefer FF, but the last DQ was one of the most fun RPGs I've ever played.

They’re both lovable characters that have a lot of depth, especially during Act 2.
