Daft Punk's ''Random Access Memories'' (pt. 2)

I just figured now that it's officially out that it deserved a new thread.

What were you guys expecting with it?

I'll be completely honest, I was NOT expecting it to be that emotional or disco inspired. I was expecting Discovery part 2 but I was pleasantly surprised with RAM. The whole album was veeeery emotional and soulful, which is very refreshing to see, especially in the dance music scene. I feel that dance music as a whole has kind of lost that about itself and that it's impersonal and doesn't pull your heart strings, where this album was totally pulling the whole time (with the exception of a couple songs).

With that being said, there a ton of people who dislike this album. I feel like these people kinda set their expectations waaaaaay too high and expected to be blown away by Discovery part 2, which was not what Daft Punk was trying to do. For what Daft Punk was trying to accomplish, I think the album was executed very well.

I personally love the album, from front to back. I think that it starts pretty well, ends pretty well, and peaks pretty well. Although there are a couple songs that I don't LOVE. Those songs would be The Game of Love and Giorgio by Moroder. Iunno, those songs just aren't great to me.

Did anyone else feel incredibly let down by Contact when they first heard it? It was just building and building and building and building and just sizzled away after. I was expecting it to explode and be a classic Daft Punk tune, but nope. It's still a great song but man, wish they capitalized on that build-up.

My favourite by far off this album is Touch. Man, what a perfect song.

Other favourites are Within, Lose Yourself to Dance, Doin' it Right, Give Life Back to Music, and Beyond.

Anyway, what were your opinions? Did you hate it or love it?

I honestly did not like it enough to buy it. It didn't feel like the whole Daft Punk sound to it. The Tron Legacy soundtrack was spectacular and I was expecting something like that. Get Lucky was the closest thing to a "Discovery" song, IMO, which is why a lot of people like it. I can understand changing your sound, but it was a seriously drastic change. I know they set out to reinvent House and Electronic Music, but it was more modern-day House. Even if I was expecting a house album, it would not have been spectacular or blown me away. It kind of bugs me that they chose to go in such a different path than what they were already on. I was really excited for it, but it was a let down IMO.

I completely agree, I was not expecting it to be almost entirely slow songs. Although, I did buy it three times (once in all mediums available) because I pirate so much music it's ridiculous. I figured that I'd respect ONE of the artists that truly has MY respect. It was a veeery risky move what they did and yes, it probably wasn't for the best.

I think everyone took "re-inventing house music" as they're going to make French House again because let's be honest, French House is dead. French House's time has come and gone. I guess what they truly meant by re-inventing it was that they were going to bring back the roots of REAL dance music. French House is the roots of modern dance music, but Disco is the roots of French House.

Problem is, it wasn't any of that. The songs just didn't have that Daft Punk feel to them. I don't really know how to explain it. I guess Daft Punk fans would know what I mean by that. I feel like they tried too hard to incorporate other singers and musicians into it as well.

Well I'm a Daft Punk fan and I felt that they still sounded like Daft Punk.

What about Fragments of Time, Contact, Give Life Back to Music, Lose Yourself to Dance, Within, or Beyond?

I feel those songs are totally Daft Punk inspired. Sure they're not as bumping and clubby as almost every other Daft Punk song, but I still feel it was them just in a new way.

When I first listened to it I was not into it at all, but after a few days, I'm digging the hell out of most of it!

All feel good music with lots of twists and surprises. Like when the choir suddenly stops on the song Touch. Also the last track, Contact, is just brilliant IMO.

Like most other Daft Punk fans, I was really hoping for another Discovery, but I'm not let down.
There are more songs on it I like than not. It was interesting for them to bring in a lot of new people and to experiment with an approach like they did.

The album as a whole is worth it. But a few of the songs are still pretty crappy.

It's got a good bit of Daft Punk sounding songs on it, and I think that makes it worth it.

Contact sounds very 'Daft Punk', if I may use that as an adjective. What song would you say is the worst on the entire album, in your opinion?

I really enjoyed the album. At first that wasn't the case, but that came down to me not giving all the songs enough time to get into it.
I would of liked a more dance-y album, like in the song 'Get Lucky'. Speaking of, that's one of my least favourites songs on it. That said I still enjoyed the album, there's not a song that I would say I do not like at all.

In my opinion, Giorgio by Moroder was the weakest song on the album. But I know for a fact that everyone else loves it, so it's probably just me. The Game of Love and Instant Crush were also mediocre for me. Other than that, the album is great. Once you get to Lose Yourself to Dance, the album is fantastic.

Like I don't know. I listen to music for.. MUSIC. Not for dialogue and random beats to don't go anywhere. Most of the actual songs sound amazing, but I'd rather do without the useless stuff.

Favorite album of the year so far, love the collaborations; Nile Rodger is great on guitar and gives it a great vibe. I don't understand the complaints of it not sounding "Daft Punk" enough, that is just silly. One of the main reasons why I love DP so much is because each album has a different and its own distinct sound. I can't really say that there are any songs on the album that I disliked, my favorites being "Fragments of Time" and "Touch". The music was beautifully composed, the lyrics were catchy and elegant (albeit a bit repetitive, but it's DP what do you expect?). It was a solid Daft Punk album, and an overall great album.

Edit: Also another problem is people were expecting this to be another Discovery; what should be expected is that it stands on its own merit as a good album.

I love Random Access Memories. I was really pleasanlty surprised by the general chill-out mood of the album. But after thinking about it for a few days, it now seems to be a natural progression from Human After All. I like all the tracks, but the one that stood out the most for me on my first listening was the last track, Contact. It's really a sharp contrast the the rest of the album, and brings an epic conclusion.
I like the way Daft Punk have progressed and evolved, and Random Access Memories certainly didn't disappoint me.

Oh man, I have a pretty solid connection with this album right now. My fiance and I were out at a friends house last night having a few drinks, and got home a bit tipsy. I turned on some music and forgot that I had put RAM on a separate playlist. Pretty much one of the best nights of my life. It was just a really good experience with the music!
