    I've done it once and the main downsides were: 1. Weeds 2. Flowers turn into weeds as well (basically they become as abundant as weeds and are 10x more annoying to get rid of) 3. Your mailbox is spammed with letters and gifts

    Doesn't matter if you've visited other people's islands or not. If you have an empty plot, you have 1 to 2 days to fill it. For your case, it seems like the plot was empty for 1 full day before the game moved someone in for you automatically. I think this is partly why so many people island...
