So the update came, and those with Live have surely checked the ins and outs by now.

Oh I know.
But I think of it this way...
After each purchase, say you bought an arcade game, you have about 200 points perhaps.
You can obviously save this for next time.
Or as easily you could buy a new shirt or something, if that's what you want to do with your points.
