The Wii U doesn't appear to be the only new hardware release Nintendo has planned for the Christmas period. A miniature version of the existing Wii console could be hitting store shelves (in Canada, at the very least) by December 7.

Best Buy's Canadian website has spilled the beans, with an image of a redesigned "Wii Mini" displayed proudly on the retailer's homepage. Clicking the link takes users nowhere but a general Wii storefront, but the December 7 date is displayed alongside it.

The Wii Mini comes with a standard Wii Remote controller, and a red-and-black base unit that stands up on its own. It follows internet rumours that suggested a Wii Mini console will launch in early December. Seems like those rumours are holding up to be true.

We've put a call in to Nintendo about this, and will let you know if we hear official word back

I pre-ordered one. :p

I don't have a wii and there are some wii games I'd like to play. I don't have any gamecube games, so that's not an issue and I don't care about not being able to play online.

My parents will probably try playing it too, so for them, simpler is better (and better for me when I show them how to use it).

It may also be a nice collectors item years from now.

Nintendo is my favorite video game company. They make a lot of good games that are my cup of tea.

But sometimes I feel like they only care about money. I don't see the point of a smaller Wii, especially since it's so close to the release of the Wii U. If anyone is going to get a Wii at this point, they should be going for the Wii U.

*Sigh*

This makes me more disappointed then the WiiU.

The Wii was a creative idea at first, but to me it has turned out to be a fail console. Sure it has its fun games, but people don't want to stand up to play a video game. I don't want to have to do work up a sweat trying to play a game. I wish Nintendo would have brought out a new console that could actually play games and run them efficiently. Maybe next year :P.

I never stand up when playing the Wii. Unless I'm playing Wii Sports. Which I don't. Cuz sports are boring and if I wanted to play one, I would in real life. My only problem with the Wii is it has way too many Hannah Montana games on it. I'm hoping the Wii U will not be like this and they focus on the good games. Most likely not though. All of their consoles and handhelds seem to have those stupid 9 year old girl games lately. Lol, the DS has a game for helping you to quit smoking. Oh, and my other problem is a couple of my games discs don't read anymore. Which is BS because they aren't scratched at all. And they are always Mario games that become unreadable :/

I rambled on too long here..

Not to really throw out any insinuations against anyone's money, but if anyone is getting this why don't you just get the Wii U instead?

It plays Wii games if I understand correctly, though I'm not sure if it has gamecube controller ports or not. Just seems like the better idea because you'd be getting a brand new console that plays it's own games, and a Wii built into it.

As for Puddle's post, I agree and I've pointed those exact things out multiple times over the past few years. Nintendo's mistake with the Wii is that they built it specifically to play motion games, whereas they should have built it with motion game compatibility, giving you the option to play it with the motion control instead of forcing it on you. The Wii U was a big improvement in that regard.

I'm not really into home consoles and this will be my first one. At the moment, the Wii U doesn't appeal to me and I can't justify spending that much on a system that I may not use very often.
As I said before, my parents may play the Wii too and it would be a lot easier for them to figure out how to use the Wii than the Wii U. They may use it more than me and in the event I do get a Wii U later on, at least my parents will have started out on a simpler system.

If this system stays as a Canadian exclusive, it could turn into a nice collector's item down the road, whereas the Wii U won't.
I'm sure there are a lot of Canadians buying the Wii Mini to resell to people in other countries.

Oh, you Canadians, you. So silly.

I'm a little confused, though, as to why it's a Canada exclusive... I can understand UK, Japan, or US, but Canada? I don't get it. I guess it's just Nintendo's way of saying sorry for forgetting 'America's top hat' for so long.
And no, it cannot play gamecube games.

Why Canada? Because the UK, Japan, and the US for the probably have more access to high-speed internet than some areas in Canada do. There are rural areas here that still use dial-up.

This system is great for those who live in regions that don't have access to high-speed internet, rely on dial-up, or have no internet access at all. Low income households too.

If it does well in Canada, it could mean Nintendo could branch out to other countries that don't have easy access to the internet and maybe then, 'Canada's underwear" would get it too.
