I see a lot of people with the rule "No talking to villagers" Why? I will never understand it.

Because the villagers will start talking about you and some people just don't want to hear that all the time.

Occasionally when you talk to your villagers, if you had people from other towns talk to them, they will mention [Mayor X] from [Town Y]. It can be annoying, especially if you don't personally know the people.

I don't get that rule either, despite what Togekiss said. I don't care if you talk to my villagers

Will the villager eventually stop mentioning the visitor?

think it depends upon the amount of visitors you have in your town. i've only had a handful, i think only two who have talked to my villagers and my villagers haven't stopped talking about the first visitor and it's been at least two-three months thus far.

tbh it's more annoying to me than the basic stuff the villagers say (though it's cool when they first talk about it but two-three months later? eh). i'll never stop people from talking to my villagers though.

I quite like it when my villagers talk about players they've met in the past, it sort of gives them their own unique history ^_^

When I was a Noobie and not sure about how the process of "convincing a villager to move to your town" really worked, I was afraid that if a visitor talked to my animals they might somehow "steal" one away! LOL I also feared that I might miss the "ping" for "I'm moving" if visitors talked to my peeps! :)
Now, I know it's OK and nothing to fear ... so I don't mind if visitors talk to them.

I let EVERYONE who wants to talk to my villagers, so my villagers talk about EVERYONE who ever visited to me! XD It IS a little annoying, but even if I hadn't done that, they still mention people that dream about the town too. I find that annoying too, but at the same time, I get curious and go and dream about that person's town sometimes.

In the end, there's always repetitive convos with the villagers, and it doesn't matter if it's this or something else. Either way it gets annoying and boring, so I don't care if people talk to them and the villagers mention them.

The only other reason I can think of why people don't like it, is if it's a trade. A lot of people, myself included, like to do trades as quickly as possible. And when someone wonders off and starts looking around, talking to villagers, etc...it just drags it out, or makes you worried that they are going to start running around your town, etc. It could be that they are just being friendly, but when you just met someone, and you don't know them, it's one of those things that makes you suspicious a little.

I think I'd rather hear about someone else's town than "What color flowers do you think I like?", "If I were an animal what kind of animal would I be?", "What kind of snack do you think best represents me?" for the five millionth time.

The Pennifer said the most likely reason. If a villager is in boxes and you as a visitor barged in and talked to them, they'll move into your town instead, and you might be ruining someone's trade. That's most likely when some people would just say "no talking to villagers" to be safe.

Pft I don't care if people want to talk to my villagers
heck I also don't care if people wander around my town without me babysitting like every second

call me too trusting or whatever but I mean, if you're in my town there's 100% chance I've invited you anyway, probably from a forum like this where if you heck up too bad EVERYONE will know about it.

To me, it's just basic courtesy to get explicit permission before doing *anything* in anyone's town,
whether I'm there for a trade/adoption, or a friendly visit.

When in doubt, ask. Nicely. Most people wouldn't mind letting you talk to their villagers, and ask for permission first is the key.

On the other hand, why this compelling urge to talk to others' villagers...?
If one's there for adoption or trade, there's no reason for you to wander off or try to mingle with the residents.
If you are there upon an invite, then chances are you already past the stage of "can I talk to so and so".

In my case, I have 2 'real' visitors ever in my main town.
It's quite lovely to see my villager pals bringing up the names of my friends.

As for cycle towns, just refrain from getting chatty there, for obvious reasons. ^_^

The only reason I can see is that people don't want their villagers constantly talking about one person they traded with months ago.

I don't mind when my friends who visit often do it, but when it's a one time trade thing, it irks me because I like trades to go swiftly and without my villagers, months later coming up to me telling me about "oh I just met *villager* from *town* the other day, what a *random rumor* " when they met the person once like 8 months ago >___>

The same repeating dialogue over and over.
Get's annoying incredibly fast.
One of my least favorite aspects of New Leaf.

But you'd get that regardless.

In fact if anything I imagine it'd be worse if you didn't let people talk to villagers, as it gives the game less stuff to pick from for the villagers to say.

Not significantly less, tho. In fact, barely less. And it's one topic some people don't want. If they make it a rule they have their own reasons and don't have to justify them to anyone. It's just common courtesy (well, not so common in this day and age) to just follow people's rules. It's not difficult.
