All I see about the mystery islands is that they’re boring and dull and all the same. Once you’ve seen one you’ve seen all. I maybe visit a island to strip mine or when I’m running low on stuff which is maybe like once or twice a week.

And yet their worth as a currency has boomed! Like I see people selling stuff for 500NMTs. How do you even get that many?!

But why are they so popular and so precious if the islands themselves aren’t that great or offer that much? Am I missing something here?

I personally used a ton (200+) NMT to get a rare rose island to gather hybrids.
Also people can't get all villagers via amiibos (Audie, Raymond, etc) so they have to use islands.

i assume it's primarily because people may go through a crazy amount of nmt searching for dreamies, as well as the fact that you can create diy tarantula islands for mass igb payout

Its currency for many reasons but its mainly because many of us want to search for our dreamies, and many of us want to be able to make extra bells from selling rare fruit or finding tarantulas!

You can island hop and essentially find all your dreamies that way. It takes a while and a lot of tickets which is why they're so popular.

Villager market is probably what's driving the NMT price right now.

To be frank good of chunk of is because few people started using nmt then people started followed because in most cases people don't like going against the gain when has do with the player made economy then also add in hunting.

I think dreamie hunting? I personally don't use them a lot because what ruined NL for me was when I started being able to rapid fire make my town perfect. I'm enjoying the slow pace of playing in real time and just having the villagers I have, letting the ones I don't want go as they want to. But, if I played like I did NL, the ability to not have to rely on auctions for your weird random dreamie or your hard to get dreamie would have been very appealing.

I’ve tried still going forward with NMTs in hopes of tarantula islands, but unless I’m misunderstanding, you have to get lucky to get an island that can be turned into one. I usually get multi-level islands which apparently can’t become tarantulas. Last night, I got one that was flat but with a spiral shaped island that spawned too many fish to work. It’s just too risky for me to keep doing it in hopes of a flat dry island I can turn into tarantula island.

There is a specific Tarantula Island that you can access. It's very rare (like a 1% chance) and you can only go once per day, but it is guaranteed to always spawn tarantulas. People also jury-rig bamboo islands into makeshift tarantula islands but the spawn rate is much lower since the game will also try spawning mole crickets, tiger beetles, and wharf roaches.

NMTs are the only way to actively find the new villagers rather than waiting for them to appear in the campsite or randomly move in. Also the rare islands that can net you hybrids or let you farm large fish/tarantulas/scorpions/etc which are even more valuable with Spike and CJ being in the game.

think it's like an 'economic stigma' surrounding bells. a lot, and i mean a lot of people have duped items like crowns and switches when the game was in its early days - but 'drop' items, like tickets and bell-bags were NOT able to be duped.

I've been to the real one once, but haven't had any luck making one yet. I tried on a bamboo island, but my tools all broke and I had no nook miles left to buy replacements!
