Hahaha I used to do the same thing! I learned about a year ago that you only need to press A once to reel it in.

It simply doesn't feel like fishing without mashing "A".

What I used to down as hold "A" down the entire time. Then I learned you just have to press it once and that was it! I still usually hold it down though.

I knew that you only had to tap A to reel fish in, but I would still tap A like a maniac because it felt more natural xD.
