Can you receive a villager when you have one in boxes? I've never tried that

It would make sense if you can. i just want to make sure that shes actually in boxes at the right time, and i dont skip ahead too far or something happened to where she didnt move. I dont want ot accidently screw you out of a trade. Though i cant think of a time i have tried it.
