I want to get a new game. I'm willing to listen to suggestions, but for now, I'm trying to decide between Magician's Quest/Enchanted Folk and Harvest Moon: A New Beginning. Are they even worth getting? I could always wait a while longer and get the next Harvest Moon game, which sounds more interesting, and I've heard that Magician's Quest is a bit clunky and hasn't aged well. On the other hand, I loved the old Harvest Moon games and Magician's Quest sounds really fun.

If you've played either of those games, what did you like and dislike about them?

By the way, does Magician's Quest really have bat villagers? Or is it only the sequel that has only been released in Japan?

If I was you I would skip over A New Beginning and just get Story of Seasons when it comes out. A New Beginning didn't capture my interest at all and I've been an intense harvest moon fan for about 8 years now. I don't have an opinion on Magician's Quest because I've never played it but I have read online that its similar to animal crossing (I think). Honestly if you want to buy a game to capture your interest for a long time consider Rune Factory 4, Pokemon or Fantasy Life, because if you like animal crossing (which I presume lmao) and harvest moon you will probably be interested in these titles :)

Thanks for your reply! :)

I already play Pok?mon, so I was looking for games I might not know about yet. Thanks for saying that about A New Beginning. What about it did you dislike? I was inclined to buy it based on the reviews and pictures I've seen, so some feedback about the cons would be great. Story of Seasons sounds really amazing because of the new special characters so I'm definitely going to get it and I don't know if getting two Harvest Moon games that are presumably similar is worth it.

I'll look into Rune Factory 4 and Fantasy Life. I've heard of them but didn't take much notice, so I'll look up reviews. Isn't Rune Factory like Harvest Moon but with puzzles?

Magician's Quest appealed to me because I've heard it's like Animal Crossing in a magic school, which sounds like a cool premise, but I've also heard so many mixed things about it that I'd only take the leap if there's really bat villagers.

I've played Magicians Quest (DS one). Personally I think people are right in saying it hasn't aged well, it's indeed very simliar to Animal Crossing imo, but I got bored of it super quickly. Can't say anything for the new Harvest Moon bc I haven't played any past Animal Parade, but I think you should look into getting Fantasy Life! imo it's very similar to Harvest Moon, but a lot better because there's a lot more things you can do (though you can't farm/get married)!

course if you wanna try Magician's Quest at least it'll probably be pretty cheap? I saw it in EB games for like $15 the other day.

Definitely look into Rune Factory 4. It's been a few years since I've played a Rune Factory game but I am so hyped for its eshop release over here in the UK (presumably it will be released by the end of the year?). Anyway Rune Factory was originally intended to just be a spin off of harvest moon with monster taming but it gained so much popularity so it became its own franchise which is really awesome. Also if you live in America its been out just over a year so you should be able to buy it.

Fantasy Life is also a time consuming game which can either be slowly paced or quick paced depending on how you want to play (this aspect is similar to Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing and Rune Factory games) which you can have a lot of fun with. It is also multiplayer so that adds to the fun even more, it even has something similar to a bff system from New Leaf which is good if you have loads of friends with the game :D

Thanks! I don't know if I'm a big fan of the monster taming idea (I like it in Pok?mon but that's it) but I'll still look into it. I don't live in America so I'll have to wait too to get it on the eshop. :)

Fantasy Life sounds really fun, but I don't know anyone else who plays it, and I don't know if it's my genre. I've been reading about it and it seems like you can follow the story part at your own pace or when you want to unlock things, which sounds good to me, so I might try it! Thank you so much. :)

Harvest moon DS/DS cute were the best harvest moon games imo

i wish they would just go back to that classic theme instead of making games n 3d :/

I am a huge harvest moon fan (haven't played A New Beginning however) and I've also played Magician's Quest, so I'll give you my input ~

Things I liked about Magician's Quest:
- Similar to Animal Crossing but with magic. Learning spells was really cool and I liked to collect them ^^
- Taking classes was fun since you could pass notes and stuff
- You could date one of your classmates (they were animals though so i guess that's a little weird? :/ lol I liked it anyway)
- If I remember correctly, the dialogue was entertaining and I really liked talking to the animals
- I never found a whole lot of guides/walkthroughs for the game (there might be more now, I'm not sure) so it was fun trying to figure out how the game worked
- There was a magic shop and you could do little quests for the shopkeeper, which I liked (they got repetitive though)
- Going into "magician time" or whatever was always a crazy adventure XD
- Flying on brooms
- You could ask a villager to follow you for awhile and then they'd just be by your side until you told them to leave. It was cute :3

Things I disliked:
- My house was infested with mushrooms all the time. I didn't know how to stop it >.< (I also seem to remember something about furniture being stolen from your house? Not sure if that was it... But I remember I was afraid to put furniture down for some reason)
- There wasn't much you could do with spells other than prank the animals or have fun showing them off
- The shopping in this game was meh.. not as big of a variety of items as in AC, even though there were more stores and one was huge
- I sometimes got confused or didn't know how to do something and a lot of the time the internet wasn't very helpful. It was never a very popular game, so I could't find much guidance (again, there might be more now)
- Similar to Wild World, it got boring and repetitive quickly
- Compared to 3DS games, the graphics are terrible and I agree it hasn't aged well

Result: definitely better than Wild World, but not nearly as good as New Leaf or Harvest Moon. An interesting game and quirky, but hasn't aged well. I'm sure you could find a used copy for cheap though, so it might be worth picking up if you're bored and want to try out a unique little game.
I personally lost interest and gave the game to my cousin. Not sure if she like it or played it though (she was eight).

Harvest Moon on the other hand is one my favorite game series (along with AC and Rune Factory) and has been since I was little. I'm personally waiting for the release of Story of Seasons, but there are many HM games out that I'm sure you'd enjoy. A New Beginning got great reviews and is considered by many to be the best addition to the series (for handheld versions, that is). I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed, but in my opinion Story of Seasons looks like it will be even better so you might want to wait.

I hope that helped! <3
