I put my 4 flowers in a diamond pattern, bury the fertilizer in the center and then water. I don't know if it helps, but I stand on the fertilizer spot and water facing North, then turn around and water facing South. This way the ground has been watered and my idea is that maybe it makes it more likely to get a hybrid in the watered ground. I have no idea if that is necessary or not. And sometimes you just don't get a hybrid. Just try again. In my town, I found that over time it works pretty consistently on blue roses, purple roses, purple tulips and purple pansies. Other flowers are more stubborn and it might only work 1 out of 4 tries.
