So I am obsessed with horror movies and always looking for new ones to watch. What movie has scared you the most? If you like scary movies too, which ones would you recommend?

My faves are the Grudge movies (American and Japanese) for a good ghost story, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil for an awesome horror-comedy, and Martyrs for something a little more hardcore.

Bonus points to anyone who recommends something good I haven't seen ;) (no seriously I have way too much TBT and no movies to watch this weekend).

Edit: I'll pay everyone who's suggestions I end up watching tomorrow/late tonight :)

But in all seriousness, I think the scariest horror movies are foreign ones (aka outside the U.S.). A Tale of Two Sisters is pretty freaky.. watched that with a friend. It inspired "The Uninvited" apparently, which I haven't seen. Also, Shutter (Thai version). Mama is supposed to be good, it's on my list of movies to watch.

I thought The Descent was pretty good, scary for people who have claustrophobia. Same with Buried, although I don't really know if I would classify that one as "horror," its more like suspense because the only "scary" thing about it is the fact that it's about a guy that's buried alive.

The Uninvited and The Strangers are both good movies imo. I also liked As Above, So Below but that's just because I think the Paris catacombs are cool. Idk I don't really get scared by movies but these are some that I enjoyed watching.

If you don't mind reading subtitles The Orphanage is good, but again, not really scary.

I keep editing because I keep thinking of more lol. "May" is another one that has a pretty weird/creepy premise and involves a creepy doll. I guess I'd consider it horror since this girl goes around murdering people for specific body parts of theirs that she likes

I saw Mama, and it was okay! But I recommend Dolly Dearest. Its a pretty scary movie, but its like 20 or so years old or something like that.

Yeah I've been meaning to watch A Tale of Two Sisters. I've been holding off because I've seen the Uninvited so if they have the same twist at the end then I might have accidentally ruined the original for myself. Also seen Shutter and Mama, they're both pretty ok.

I haven't seen From Justin to Kelly though, but I'm not sure I'd want to watch it alone...

I haven't seen many scary movies, but the scariest that I've seen was Chernobyl Diaries (If you haven't seen it before)

Quarantine is pretty good if you're a fan of the POV style of filming. and The Crazies is good if you find zombies creepy

The Babadook.

People don't like it, but it's because it's not a typical boring american horror movie. It's less focused on a monster, and more focused on emotions/mind states. I really recommend it, it's beautifully done

Drag Me to Hell is kind of a horror comedy in my opinion. like I don't think it's necessarily supposed to be funny but a lot of really dumb stuff happens in it. And a lot of people consider it to be scary so idk.

Normally horror movies don't get to me, but the music in Insidious paired with a couple scenes were enough to freak me out a 'lil bit.

where you see the black shape in the kitchen hiding and in the 'other' world when suddenly all their faces are there smiling at you

Ah yeah that's a good one. I love horror movies that make fun of the genre.

So far the ones I haven't seen are: Dolly Dearest, A tale of two sisters, and The Babadook! That latter two are ones I've been meaning to get around to.

Would still love to hear more though!

Also speaking of Thai horror has anyone seen 13 Beloved? So silly and over the top but it's one of my faves from Thailand. I think there's a shot-for-shot American remake of it too.

I can't think of any that I've seen that you probably haven't considering all the ones I've seen are pretty main stream lol. I'll come back if I think of more! :)

I watched A Tale of Two Sisters with my friend and I didn't enjoy it. I wasn't scared. Maybe it's because I saw The Uninvited beforehand?

Mama wasn't very good. It had really predictable jumpscares, and it wasn't very scary. I liked the idea of the story, but it really wasn't done well.

I second watching Shutter, and also Wake in Fright is really good.

this one is more of a thriller, but disturbia is really good. (rear window is the original, but disturbia is more thrilling and modern,) for some reason i just love that movie. basically these kids think their neighbour is a serial killer, and no one believes them so they spy on him, and as you watch you have no idea if he his or not. and then identity is a good one, it has a really good twist at the end. As for the scariest, i think some foreign ones are probably going to be the scariest - for example ju-on, (which you said youve seen) rec., dark water, ect. and i saw one recently that actually really scared me, i was called oculus. something about it is actually pretty disturbing, not the best but still worth the watch. And jesus, i saw parts of martyrs and it was so disturbing - the end scene is one you cant unsee.

I actually haven't even seen REC yet! Found footage movies tend to give me motion sickness (I know I'm like 90), but yeah I should give that one a shot too! And I also have never heard of Wake in Fright so I'll add that to the list too :)

I also really liked Oculus!

Edit: and kaylee I actually haven't seen As Above, So Below (missed that the first time I read your post) so I'll give that one a shot too!

I don't know if I'd still feel the same way about the movie now, but the first time I watched Disturbia, it made my heart race like no other movie I'd ever seen. Same for The Strangers. I'd kind of like to re-watch it now, to see if it's as scary in my living room as it was in the dark theatre.

Let's see, other suggestions from my Netflix list (and in case you didn't notice, I've linked you to the IMDB page for each one):
*Neverlake (I really like this one: it's not super scary, but it's creepy, and the ending is just awesome.)
*In Fear (Another that isn't necessarily jump-scary, but it's creepy, and I'm a big fan of Iain de Caestecker.)
*Haunter
*7 Below
*You're Next
*Another vote for Oculus. (What can I say? It's Karen Gillan.)

First of all, it's really cool to encounter another Martyrs fan! That one is right up there as one of my all-time favorites. If you're into the more transgressive style of cinema, you could give The Poughkeepsie Tapes a try. It can be a bit hard to find since it was never officially released, but it's definitely worth a watch if you can get your hands on it.

Other than that, I concur with the person who recommended The Descent; I thought it was very well-done and had such an ominous vibe throughout. Although it may not the scariest movie out there per se, Scream is always a good classic. V/H/S was really cool and different and my friends and I all enjoyed it immensely, but I wouldn't recommend the follow-up titles. I may come back and edit this if I think of more, but best of luck in finding some enjoyable new titles!
