Piplup is a good choice, but I personally think you should pick Chimchar for an easy ride.

Piplup, in the long run, he's easily the best. The only gym I've had trouble on so far is the Water Gym.

Now I have 7 gym badges and a happy Empoleon.

Definitely. With Torterra, the only Gym you'll ever have trouble with is Snowpoint's.
