This'll be the first time I do this sort of thing in my town to add to the theme :0
My theme is a tourist destination of a cryptid spotting place.

I got the investigator/eccentric (the mayor)
And I plan on having a gift shop owner whose house is used as a gift shop

Should I use one or both of the third and fourth slots? And what would they be?
I also need suggestions on where to put the buildings

maybe a slot for a hotel?
your character could be the receptionist and the whole house could be designed like a hotel
with the main room as a reception/front desk area, and you can have guest rooms, laundry
room and maybe even a restaurant?

That sounds like a good idea, but I think I could probably combine that with the gift shop :0
It may be a tourist spot but I want to keep the primary focus on the town as a cryptid spotting area if that makes sense

that totally makes sense!
and it would also makes sense to have a gift shop in the hotel!

i'm not sure exactly what you mean by "investigator" so i don't know if you already had these in mind but if i were to make characters based on a cryptid spotting town i'd make a scientist and journalist too. a photographer, too, though i guess that would overlap with investigator or journalist.
if you want to add a twist of villainy you could also add a cryptid hunter, but i guess that would be hard to portray in animal crossing.

Yeah those would fall under investigator, although,, I actually really do like the cryptid hunter idea. That gives a chance for some cool story elements, especially since I plan on having the gift shop's owner be a wendigo as her backstory. I may consider doing that! Thank you!! :0

Ruby from RWBY?

I actually got Ruby the rabbit living in my town, That reminds me I still gotta check that series out and now acnl Ruby is gonna be a constant reminder to me to do that

But yeah I don't wanna make characters heavily based on official characters from others things, im going for an original story and characters approach
Unless the suggestion was a joke then disregard that lmao

maybe a hunter kind of person? idk bigfoot sightings are in the woords where hunters like to hunt. idk. like a house thats a log cabin. or a camper.

i like the hotel idea.

someone could be a monster, too! like a werewolf and no one knows it except for on the full moon he is out and about. or one of the cryptid's wife or child

you could also make one house a museum of local folklore and maybe the person who runs it is a tour guide who is very overly happy and cheery and no one really knows why

i think the eccentric's house could be isolated in a forest and the gift shop could be as close to the train station because that's where gift shops go at the exit :-) a museum could go by town hall and a monster person could live either near where the eccentric lives as a cover or else live on their own by the ""real""" place the cryptids are
