I've always wondered this myself. What does make a villager popular? Is it their house? Personality? Look? Ect. I'm interested in knowing.

Honestly, the only difference between villagers of the same personality group is their looks. For example, Tabby is a peppy cat who is not very well liked at all and is in the lowest tier. Then you have Rosie, a peppy cat who's loved and is in tier 1. Why? She's way cuter.

I feel it's a combination of everything. I like to think that each villager has a special personality with interests. For example, Walker. Lazy type, has a contemporary design in his home, owns a piano. Something tells me he'd probably be a jazz musician, or something. Scoot. Has a spa for a house, wears a helmet, could be a cyclist. Rory. Has a bit of a Chinese motif about him, and with him being a lion, and his semi-harmonious furniture, he could probably be a professional martial artist. The list goes on.

i'd say appearance. some personality types are definitely more well liked than others, but since all villagers of the same type are essentially the same in terms of behaviour, it comes down to looks in the end.

Yeah,I'd say people are attracted to looks first when it comes to villagers but that goes for most other things as well. There are other factors involved....take Marshal for instance. In ACNL,he's the only white squirrel, the only smug squirrel and his house is full of relatively hard-to-get sloppy furniture. His design is also fairly unique(even though some people say he's bland)and since he's so coveted,I think a lot of people want him in their town as sort of a "collector's item".Then there's villagers like Rosie that are popular in part because they appeared in the Dobutsu no Mori movie and there's also a couple of other villagers that achieved some sort of notoriety because a popular Let's Player had them in their town.

definitely looks. i'd say species too. gorillas aren't very well liked by anyone, and while kangaroos aren't exactly disliked, they're definitely not popular.

It's a combination of all of those, but the biggest factor is looks. Sure, houses and personalities will be taken to account but if a villager looks good to many it won't matter.

I think it's mostly looks. Although I cannot understand why somebody as cute as Poncho is only tier 4. He's a lovely bear in and I can't see anything to dislike about his design. But yeah, mostly looks, sometimes house can play a small part in it. Particularly if somebody has a very ugly looking house (looking at you, Kyle). Generally if a villager is cute people will want them and if they're anything special like Ankha or Merengue then people will want them.

If it's only looks then why is Marshal so uber popular? He's just a plain white squirrel lol

Many people think Marshal is incredibly cute (me included) I love his plain design, I don't like villagers with too much going on and others probably agree :)
