What makes a great game?

Graphics and gameplay!!!!!! PS3 is best 4 both!!!!!!!!!!! PS3 OWNS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I picked all of the above but I don't really care about graphics i'd rather have a 64-bit game with epic gameplay than a crappy one with awesome HD graphics. (not saying the PS3 doesn't have good games.)

I picked gameplay for the same reasons.

i completly agree with u and it seems like a war off the ps3 i just wish it would END!!!!!!

I picked great gameplay. While good presentation is important too, great gameplay is what I remember in games and is the essential part of a great game.

But I'd have to say that a good story is more important than all of those.
True. If the story sucks and is tedious/monotonous, then you don't want to play the game anymore.

The expierence the game provides, awesome and fun is good, boring and crap is bad.
Like a good balance between story and gameplay is great.
For example, Oddworld Stranger has very fun gameplay and a funny story and is a great game, while Resident Evil 4 has a creepy atmosphere with plenty of action, eerie music that adds to the atmosphere, good story, and fun to fight enemies making it a great game also.
It's really a combination of characteristics that makes a great game. (all of the above)
But it's mostly a matter of opinion...

The things that I look for in a videogame are Customizable options (games like Half Life 2 Deathmatch and Little Big Planet), Great online multiplayer (I don't buy games unless they have this), and great gameplay.
If a game doesn't have online multiplayer, then I will only rent the game until I beat it. Graphics do not define how good a game is. Graphics are similar to a highly polished pretty exterior. It means nothing, because the only thing that counts is the interior.

To be honest, to get a great game, you need:

- Controls, that are only as complex as you want.

- Graphics that fit the style of the game. For example, I wouldn't want realistic looking animals and people in Animal Crossing.

- Music that isn't repetitive or monotonous.

- Creative, but easy to grasp, gameplay.

- And a story that's deep and thoughtful, but not confusing to the point where your head hurts.

And replay-ability that can keep your playing the game for months on end.

But if I had to pick one element, I'd be torn between gameplay and controls. Nice graphics and good sound are mostly just bonuses, if the gameplay is fun then it must be replay-able to some extent, and in the past games have proven that a story isn't necessary. But if the controls are weird or confusing, and the gameplay is bland, then the game isn't worth playing.

But still, a great storyline can make or break a game.

All of the above. Especially game play and music. If the game is really fun and the music sucks or is annoying, I wouldn't play as much.

I chose all of the above.
The best games I have ever played was Dragon quest 8 and Twilight princess.
It was epic, beautiful music and a great game play, not to mention the smooth graphics

Gameplay, and not necessarily epic music, just music that does not make your ears bleed, such as games like... HPatCoS for the GBA, Back to the Future for NES, and Guitar Fever.
