In your opinion, what makes a game "hardcore"? I've just been wondering this with everybody saying the Wii has no "hardcore" games...

My friends and I were talking about this Saturday.

My friend Jon said he has no idea what "hardcore" is, he just knows the Wii has very few games that fall into that category, because every "hardcore" game is for 360. I don't really see how he can tell if a game is "hardcore" if he doesn't have an opinion as to what exactly "hardcore" is.

My friend Pierson said a game has to be rated A or M to be hardcore, and the Wii has none of those. This was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. (I think he got mad when I started laughing...) First of all, the Wii does have a few higher-rated games. Secondly, having blood/gore/excessive violence/sex/profanity in a game doesn't automatically make it good.

As for myself, I don't really have a set of guidelines that makes a game "hardcore". I think some games are, and some games aren't.

But if there is some specific definition of a "hardcore game", please, somebody show it to me. Otherwise, just discuss your opinion of "hardcore" here.

My definition of a hardcore video game is a video game that you mostly play by yourself, and spend a lot of time playing it for hours at a time. This can include more multiplayer games as well such as melee which can be played competitively.

It's actually very hard to define and can differ from gamer to gamer.

My definition of hardcore games is a lengthy, highly-anticipated game that has a deep single player mode just like TK said. I include games from the big franchises under this category like Galaxy, MP3, Twilight Princess, and so on.

Thats a pretty good way of putting it, actually. There isn't a set guide line, some games just, somehow, are.
