What in the heck is cataloging?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum! So, I know that there's a catalog for the items you buy in New Leaf, but I've seen TBT shops offer cataloging. How does it work? I know I wanna complete my catalog, but I have a long way, lmao!

I believe it's when another player drops items so that you can pick them up and then return them, registering it in your catalog in the process.

@Markiemania95 is 100% correct. I had to ask the same question when I first joined. It's an easy way to add items to your catalog without having to buy everything also.
