I try to be as sincere as possible and relate it back in-game (example: I know you want this expensive book. Instead of selling furniture to me you can just be frank about it. -attaches bells- -Villager stops trying to sell me junk-). I'm also trying out the "Thank you ... Friend" trick, and being all nice. Sometimes when I can't be bothered I just write about my current state. Like being hungry or something. ^^;

Also, what do you attach? I attach clothing, furniture and fruit. It helps me to clear out my wardrobe and I hope to get something in return... u___u

What do you write in your letters? Also, how often do you send them? I send them perhaps every second day but the replies I get seem to be very lackluster or infrequent. By lackluster, I mean I get less gifts. =P

I send clothes to villagers most of the time, 99% of the time they put them on

My activity with letters fluctuates because I lost motivation to write at all when the frequency of replies seemed much lower in this than in past games (maybe that's just me?). I usually do try to do something sincere, like send them a present I feel they will truly like and explain why I'm sending it, but if I'm writing just to pass items on and hope for new ones in return I tend to just send very silly stuff like excitedly complimenting them because they are a species I find cute or something - for example, when I start in a town, I make a habit of sending each villager there a greeting letter and then one to each villager who moves in since, but because I didn't know mine that well when I first started, there was some really silly stuff going out, as there usually is. I remember meeting Baabara, adoring her for being a sheep and having a cute scarf on and so writing to her simply saying "I like your scarf! c:" or something. Another was to Kid Cat when I was so thrilled with having one of my favourite species in my town, consisting of a ridiculously written "U R ADORABLE KITTYKITTY OMG". The last I recall was to Nan, saying only "ur name is silly tbh", since here "Nan" refers to one's grandmother. They still show me those pretty much every day because they're the first ones I sent them. It hasn't stopped being funny that they treasure such feeble letters, especially with the sentimental stuff they tend to say about why they keep them and how often they claim to look at them.

NO. I feel this way too. One time I saw a mailbox full of presents attached. They were all from Tommy Nook, from the things I ordered from the catalog. =(

I'm always a little heartbroken when I don't receive a letter for every letter I write. Now I know how it feels when I don't respond to people's text messages.

@Eirrinn: Haha, it's so cute when they do! Heaps of villagers were wearing the waffle tee and I was like, "Why are you all working against me?" So I sent them clothing instead.

@kimmy27: That works too. Sometimes I plead for them to suggest a certain public works projects when I can't think of anything else to say. >>

I read that for previous games the more you wrote in the letter the better quality the item they will send back (assuming you send something too) so I try to fill all 5 or 6 lines of the letter. Is this still true?

I have also heard the number of lines you write and what you attach to your letter changes what you will receive back, so I always try to sent either fruit, clothes or furniture and hit the 3-4 line mark. I do this every morning after 9 so the villagers receive the mail at 5 and I get a response the next day.

I did it all the time in WW but so far have hardly sent any in this game. I will start though as I loved the replies I got. I fear they will never come close to Elmer's enthusiastic sign off I got in WW once: "I'm a Hammer! Elmer", eerrr, thanks?!
I send a gift and tell them what it is alongside "hope you like it!" - truly inspiring ;)

I just type a load of gobbledy goop then attach an item that I wanna get rid of. I would make the effort in writing letters, if I knew for definate that people from other towns could read them if my villagers were to share them with them, idk :l

My last letter I wrote went like this,
"Bubbles today said you smelled really bad, I don't think you smell that bad"
O and another one I sent to a male villager
"How dare you cheat on me! With a squirrel no less!"

They allways write back with kind words.

I like to send letters that include random happenings in my town. You have never go wrong with current events, right? I usually include silly things like "I saw a shark today. It got away. I was sad." or "Blathers fell asleep again. Someone needs to give that bird some coffee."

I try to write something new every time, but it's never anything particularly thought provoking. Just something moderately fun, in case they show my letters to someone. I wouldn't want that to be a boring event. If I can subtly insult them, it amuses me ^_^ They'll never know!

I wrote this to Sheldon: "I thought I saw you today, but it was just a durian. Your head looks like a durian".

I write letters every day, but only to half of my villagers, and then the other half the next day. Otherwise it becomes tedious.

I usually try write to my villagers everyday but I've been slack lately, haven't written in a few days but I normally write about what I'm feeling at the time eg. Hungry or tired, I also write about the island.

The three letters I write repeatedly to my villagers are:

-I had this fruit to share. Please enjoy. (And include a piece of fruit)
-I had this outfit and thought it would look on you. (And include some outfit from the Able Sisters or that another villager gave me.)
-Just wanted to say hi. Hope you're doing well.

Just things that are short and sweet but raise their friendship with me. And for the first one I have received fruit in return and was surprised to get a persimmon. Other fruit are the towns native ones and the pears from the fruit Isabelle gave me.

Whatever comes to mind, really. I don't write many letters, but the ones I have sent were just spur-of-the-moment sort of things. For example, when I saw that I had Ruby in my town, I sent her a letter saying "Hello again, old friend!" since I had her in my town in Wild World as well.

Usually, when they send something to me, I just send a return letter to say thank you, with something attached to it.

Trying the first one out a soon as I get home
