what do you guys consider when making a town flag?

I reeaallly loved my NL town flag, but decided to go a totally different route this time around and turn the flag more into a logo/brand for my island. It’s just a W and an E fused together in a circle. Used blue to represent the sea, yellow-orange to represent nt the sun, and used a peachy color for the background (peaches being my native fruit). Really like how it turned out. Also used the WE in the logo I made for the museum.

Here’s some of the branding, I’m also sporting some Wits’ End merch. My villagers love the hoodie.

I had totally different colors at first, but kinda liked the irony behind using bright/tropical colors on an island named Wits’ End.

My island name is Yarn Isle. I found a vector of a yarnball and put it in the online ac design website and just simplified the colors and connected the lines

I prefer designs that are simple. Generally speaking, the simpler and cleaner a design, the more recognizable the flag.

Elaborate or highly detailed designs are nice too, but they don’t make me think “flag”, if that makes sense.

Because my second NL town Melemia had such a specific meaning to me that carried over when I designed its flag

(basically I had this school workbook with a giant list of root words and their meanings - "mel" meant "song" and "emia" meant "blood" and I thought they sounded cool together as "songblood" like this is the song of my heart)

the planning I did for my island months before release involved a similar process. Once I decided on the name "Espera" and what it meant to me and how I wanted to design the island, the basic idea for the flag followed.

I don't think it's in its final form yet, I might do like an ombre effect for the background or like foggy trees or smth if I can pull it off. and ideally a leaf or two at the end of that vine/stem. It's harder to make a good-looking pixel art piece when it contorts in weird uncontrollable ways to avoid looking pixelly...

I look for something that represents both myself and the island. Since I'm a huge fan of Tom Nook and he's my favorite character (and has quickly become one of my all-time favorite characters in general), my island flag is "simply" the official Tom Nook design that Nintendo released.
