Depends what all you would want out of a console, and how much you can afford to spend.

My personal opinion is just going to be bashing the Wii and handhelds, so I'll refrain. But for me, the 360 has been the best console I've ever owned, PS3 second best(about a tie, honestly.), and then I guess the 3DS if I feel like playing a game when I'm not home.

I recommend the 3Ds, PS3, and/or if you've never owned one, a Wii. I'm not a big fan of XBOX, I'm more of a Sony/Nintendo guy, so naturally, I'm biased against XBOX.

The Xbox 360 has the best quality of gaming I've ever played. It's so easy to go online and play a game with anyone in the world. Yeah, you have to pay for Xbox LIVE, but it's totally worth it. After having LIVE for more than 3 years, I can't say it's been a waste of money.

I completely agree with Sock here. Xbox offers wayyyyy much more and the fee is worth it completely. If you're into the sort of games Nintendo makes and play those exclusively, then yeah.. one of those consoles would be for you. But if you want a variety of games and a pretty great online function, then Xbox. PS3 is pretty great too in that aspect.

My personal favourite is the Xbox. Yes, you do have to pay for Xbox live but on the plus it offers 24/7 dedicated servers which DON'T get hacked (98% of the time) and you get brilliant games like Halo.

If you do not have the option of paying for xbox live then you should consider buying the PS3; it's great value with a blue-ray player and free online play.

Honestly, I think the PS3 is the best this generation, though the Wii did have a few amazing games. I am really interested to see what the Wii U has in store.

If you want a machine to just play games with a couple knick knacks PS3 (Im not saying PS3 has no perks or add-ons but if OP doesnt care about Netflix, Last.FM, Youtube, Hulu, PS3 has the best game library of the 3 by far.)

If you want a machine to play games and loads of other stuff with great online XBOX 360

There are many consoles coming soon the market like Play station 4 and xbox 720, if you can be patient for some days you can get one of them or else I would say play station 3 will be cool.

I think PS3 is better than Xbox. PS3 has blue ray lens its make your games live. Also PS3 console handling is better than Xbox. I recommend to you, buy PS3.

If you want to have creative games that over 3/4ths of the world LOVES, go with the Wii. I have always been a fan of Nintendo. Zelda, Mario, Samus, Kirby (ugh Don't remind me about the The Crystal Shards bad ending!)
If you want a good online service, go with the Xbox 360. I love Xbox Live, PLUS you can be any age. And when they ask you to give them the billing contact info, they don't ask for the credit card number! I got the 3 month gold card.

I have no experience with PS3 sooo. here's short.
If you want a good Blu-Ray player, games that are made with Blu-Ray discs, good games, free online service, a system that scans games with a blue ray (uhh, duh.), good graphics, PS3.

I have to say that Nintendo is the most relaxed company. I love Animal Crossing, no doubt am I getting AC: 3DS!!
