What causes animals to move?

I'm pretty sure it's completely random, but I've been trying to get Paula to move for 2 days now. Usually it takes maybe an hour at most, but this is getting ridiculous.

I TT 1 month forward, load an existing character and save, TT another month forward on the 3ds clock, then load a new character to see who moved. It works pretty good.
