What can I do with a timer?

I'm fairly new to the game from wild world and i never knew what the timer was for....

Can anyone clarify?

The Timers pretty much just so when you play on wifi you can have "competitions" to see who can catch the most fish and/or bugs in the alloted amount of time you chose.
