I am trying to give one of my more recent villagers, Caroline, gifts so that she befriends me enough to give me the last reaction I need (daydreaming). How/when will I know I'm on the right track? There's definitely a cutoff point where the villager is now able to randomly ping you, and it's usually marked by a change in dialogue... To those of you who have befriended your normals, what is the change?

It's at friendship level 5 that you can unlock it. So when you make a secret greeting between you and your villager.

I have still gotten reactions from villagers with whom I don't have a secret greeting. Is there another way to tell?

The regular reactions or the special ones? Only the special ones are unlocked at level 5.

I am talking about the special ones. Will there be a hint in regular dialogue where I can tell for sure me and Caroline are at a level 5?

Not really. The other hint that is level 4 you can change their catchphrase.
Also at level 5, you should be able to get their photos.

You try to trigger a ping by running in front of her when you see her outside but I don't think running in circles in front of her is going to trigger it.

You will know when you get a secret greeting prompt, it won't be something you mistake with something else

In the past, I have gotten special reactions from villagers who have NOT given me a secret greeting prompt. Is there another way to tell with Caroline?

I can't remember what Normal villagers ask, but I do know their response to being told no is a rather sad "Oh... I just thought it would be, you know, fun" which makes me feel AWFUL. But they literally say something about having a special greeting between just the two of you, so that's what I meant by you wouldn't mistake it for something else
