Hi everyone! Quick disclaimer: I'm afraid that this might be a little long winded so Ill include a TLDR at the end.

I've just convinced a friend of mine to play New Leaf for the first time ever. Its his first AC game and he's just the type to really love this game. I want to get him a little welcome basket of in game items and random things but I've been warned by my boyfriend (who doesn't play) not to give him anything that might "break" the game for him (like golden tools right off the bat)... I have 18 items right now put away for him which leaves me another possible 8 spots (in the letters). I'm already a bit shy about how many things it is, so I definitely don't want to make multiple trips to the lockers. What I have for him right now is:

  • an afro wig, 3d glasses, 8ball shirt (for a look that resembles his real world style)
  • A Zelda wig and dress and the Samus outfit (because he told me his favourite Nintendo game was a tie between Metroid and Legend Of Zelda)
  • A pair of red black and gold roses (his favourite colour is red and when asked for his favourite flowers he said black roses)
  • A labrador ornament (his favourite type of dog and he isn't allowed to have pets in real life)
  • A tweeter and a bubble wand (for some silly celebration fun)

I was also thinking of paying for his first haircut or buying him a villager of his choice on here but I don't know if all of this is going in the right direction or not...

So yeah TLDR: If you were brand new to ACNL, what sorts of in game items would you want in a welcome basket?

Why you have this cute & funnie ideas one after another.

Well, your boyfriend looks nice smart person.
When I just started this game, what was most happy & fun was hanging out with my friends, and sharing the process of questions ( such as, "what is this??:confused: where can I get this??" ) and talking about it, figuring it out together.
Still, what I was really wanting and had been obsessed with until this day is prefect fruits that's foreign. Maybe full baskets of every each perfect fruits would be nice?

Animal crossing god bless you two<3

A big basket of lazy, fruit-begging, mindless humanimal repellent .

Oh Red you are so sweet :) Perfect fruit baskets sound like a perfect idea and I just happen to have some in my storage that I can bring him :)

I've had to restart a few times, I like having a garbage bin, silver shovel and a closet type item. He might like a piece of art to unlock the second museum floor faster.

Oooo... I like those suggestions too... Especially the clothes closet... Thats one I remember being hard to find right away and really annoying to not have...

If I were starting a new game, the things I'd want the most would be tools and a wetsuit, a WiiU and 3DS for the minigames and a trash can.

I'd second the fruit - a basket of each of the town fruits, (maybe make it a basket each of the perfect versions), plus a perfect basket of his own native fruit as so many players sell or can't find that one fruit on their trees.

Tools - an ordinary axe, shovel, sling shot (so frustrating to have to whack those balloons with a net by the cliff edge).
Tell him to complete Isabelle's tutorial so he gets either a fishing rod/net (get the one Nooklings isn't selling) & the watering can at the end of the tutorial.

Your boyfriend is right, don't give what can 'break' the game for him, so I'm not sure about giving him say even the silver tools. You could give him those a bit later maybe if he decides he would like them.

Of the streetpass gifts, bubble wand & tweeters are about the best, & you have those listed, the balloons are nice as well, especially the red/green/yellow ones if he gets into feng shui (just to give variety in a feng shui room).

Edit: - yes the poster above me, Garrett! - definitely a wet suit, that is so frustrating to wait for, especially if you have a private beach in town. And Garrett also mentions the other good to have items.

I would say a set of the standard tools would be helpful, maybe also a wetsuit so that you can start
to collect all kinds of fish, sea creatures and bugs, which you can either donate or sell then. Some
fruits would be useful too, also maybe give him an extra axe so that can do a little bit of landscaping?
Also, what about an player and a K.K. Slider song where you think that he would like it? Having some
music in the house would be nice if you ask me.

Wow! Thanks so much everybody! These are definitely some great ideas that I would never have thought of. I really like the wetsuit idea because I totally forgot about private beaches and the wait for the island. Also the music idea would be a nice touch and the coloured balloons for feng shui is brilliant and definitely goes with a celebration theme...

When I first started playing the guy that got me to play New Leaf gave me fertilizer, the megaphone, a couple more tools, some fruit, a bunny balloon, a Yoshi egg, he also went to great lengths to find me the snow boots because I'm a big fuzzy boots lover irl so he would always check Kicks and when they finally got them in he surprised me with them. He also let me visit his shampoodle to fix the ugly hair that comes with character. He also let me visit his town's stores a lot since they were better. He enacted the bell ordinance so everything we caught on the island together I could sell in his town for more so I could pay things off quicker. He really took care of me lol

He did take really good care of you! That's exactly what I want for my friend Alex. Quick question just to reassure myself... You didn't find his gifts to be too much did you? After looking at all these wonderful suggestions I'm coming to the realization that I'm probably going to need at least 1 trip to the lockers but I'm worried about overwhelming him...

I didn't because we were in the process of talking in a relationship kinda way so I just thought it was cute and sweet. I can remember we would go to his island together and he would always pay the fare for the boat ride and he would always say crap like "I'll pay I don't want you to worry about anything on this trip" or he'd come by and donate some bells to my pwp lol or he'd be like "once everything in my town is paid for we can worry about your debt lmao just corny crap like that it was fun and cute I miss it lol

but if you're worried about him thinking it's all too much and overwhelming make the gift basket kinda thing first and gift him with some goodies then you can always just say "do you need anything else? I have this and this and this if you'd like"

or just space the gift giving out a few days. Instead of just unloading it all explain some things that he might like or think is useful!
