Thankyou!

Diamond and the rest of the fourth generation are great, but if you want to try the fourth generation out, I would recommend the third version, Platinum. It irons out a lot of complaints that fans had about Diamond and Pearl, such as the lack of Fire types and the abysmally slow surfing.

My personal recommendation would be either Platinum and Black/White. Both games maintain a fairly reasonable levelling curve, and if you want a little bit of challenge, they're a little more difficult than the instalments in X/Y/OR/AS. I'd probably advise you get B/W over Platinum, though, as it has a massive selection of Pokemon for you to choose from (unlike Platinum, which is actually kind of limited at times) and what's arguably the best story so far in the main series.

IMO, you should start with Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, it's the latest release in the series and Diamond/Pearl/Platinum are quite slow, and them and the other DS games (as well as the GBA and GB games) do not have WiFi anymore, which will be a pain when it comes to filling the Pokedex and if you want to battle someone and your friends don't have those versions and therefore can't play against you. ORAS has all 721 Pokemon (as opposed to Diamond, which only has 493), the brand new 'Fairy' type and mega evolutions, which were introduced in X/Y.

However, ORAS is a bit difficult compared to X/Y (these games have all 721 Pokemon too, but they don't have as many mega evolutions as ORAS does), but that's because X/Y is ridiculously easy. ORAS can be made easier by using the Exp Share (something I didn't use) as it levels up all of your Pokemon after a battle, and if you ever decided to play competitively then I'd choose ORAS, as the breeding mechanics and EV training is a lot easier than in the other games.

I probably rambled on nonsense because I can't really describe it, but you really should consider buying Omega Ruby and/or Alpha Sapphire, although Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver/Black(2)/White(2) may be a cheaper option.

If you do choose to get Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, here are a list of differences

It's easy to understand? I didn't know how to word what I was saying because Pokemon's difficult to explain, but easy to play. You're welcome :)
I also found this useful guide, which explains the basics. However you will have a few tutorials in the game anyway, and you should pick it up easily. I finished Pokemon Pearl when I was 7 and that was more difficult and tedious than OR/AS (imo), so you shouldn't have any problem picking it up

To back up what Earth Wolf-Howl said, Platinum (which overall has more Pokemon that you can catch in-game without trading) is the best Sinnoh game, although I found the pace of it to be quite slow. Black and White, on the other hand, is focussed a lot on story and has a varied range of Pokemon, however the sequels, Black2 and White2, have more Pokemon available from other regions from the start, and has a better post-game than Black and White. You should be able to find them in shops or online for fairly cheap, and also they're only three years old, they're kind of outdated of XY/OR/AS introduced Primal Reversion, Mega Evolution, the Fairy type, etc etc

Well, the games that can be played on the 3DS that are Pokemon main games are Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heartgold, Soulsilver, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. Personally I've played each and every one of those, but if you're just getting into Pokemon you might want to save on money too. It's hard for me to decide on just one of those to play; they're all great games. But if you get the chance over time make sure to try one from each generation:

Gen4: Diamond, Pearl, Platinum

Gen1and2: Heartgold, Soulsilver

Gen5: Black, White, Black 2, White 2

Gen6: X/Y

Gen3:Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire

Btw those are listed as the generations of the regions they represented. Chronological order of when they were released was in my first paragraph.

Also, I started the Pokemon Anime and Games with Diamond, and moved on from there, still being able to experience the first 3 generations' regions thanks to HG/SS/OR/AS.

Finally, once you've got a taste for some of the main games in Pokemon, in the future if you're ever looking for more Pokemon, Pokemon has a wide and expansive list of Spinoff games for the Wii, Wii U, DS, and 3DS (all DS games can be played on the 3DS). I personally recommend trying Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, one of the first ones (NOT Gates to Infinity) like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explores of Time, Darkness, or Sky.

There's literally so much to Pokemon nowadays including the Anime, Manga, main games and spinoff games that it can't be experienced quickly. After playing X/Y or OR/AS, try out some of the other games too whenever you have the spare money to spend. Trust me, you won't regret it. ;)

Just go with one of the new ones like RhinoK suggested. X/Y/Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are the most recent games and OR/AS are the ones that still being supported right now. They have more content to last you awhile compared to X/Y as well.
