Robin, for example, has two plants at the front door and the rest of her furniture is pretty much along the back wall. She's got a lot of open space. If I gift her furniture will she use that open space or will she replace something she already has?

It depends on the dimensions of the item you want to gift them and the items currently in the house; you also have to consider where they put their DIY workbench. Generally, if there is an open spot (e.g. a 1x1 spot) and you gift them a 1x1 item, they should place it there without replacing an existing item but it is still random (someone check me on this please xD ).
