I've never traded any villagers but yesterday a villager of mine moved out and I assume I can bring in a new one via trading if I have a space?
My confusion upon reading a lot of guides is that I currently have 8 villagers and 2 created characters and having never traded before I was wondering how exactly I go about acquiring someone elses villager? I know they have to "be in boxes" when I visit and apparently all I have to do is speak to them but then I read a guide about some kind of queuing system which I didn't understand at all.

I wouldn't mind taking on another villager using the trading center on these forums but as far as I'm aware I only have today to do it and I don't want to mess anyone around so I was wondering if someone could explain step by step how I go about buying/finding a villager to move in and ensuring they do actually move?

Basically, you have to speak to the villager that you want to move into your town once (in some scenarios multiple times) until they ask about moving into your town. It usually only takes me one go to make a villager in boxes move into my town. c:

And yes, you do have space! Since you are currently at 8 villagers, and the max villagers you can have is 10. Once you are at 8 villagers, that becomes the entering period (where a villager will randomly move in unless you go adopt a villager from another town before the random move-in moves in)
And once you are at 9 or 10 villagers, that becomes the exiting period where your villagers will constantly ask to move more.

Well anyways, I'll give you a full-on explanation .

So since you are at 8 villagers, and if you go to another town and talk to a villager in boxes and they agree to move in, they will definitely move in. That's because you have 8 villagers that's how you know the villager you convinced to move in will definitely move in so you won't need to worry about whether that villager will move in or not. Just continue talking to villager in boxes until they mention about moving into your town. It is a certain chance they will move in. If you have 10 villagers, and you try adopting a villagers in another town that is in boxes, it won't work since 10 is your max villagers and you can't have more than 10.

1. Find someone who is giving away a villager/ selling a villager and just basically negotiate something with them and add their fc. Then they will open their gates at the train station and once you enter their town, you can follow them to the villager's house(the villager in boxes).

2. Enter the villager's house and talk to them, they will mention your town and eventually ask to move in. After you have had the conversation with them, exit the house and that's it. c: And then you can leave the town.

Also, you can TT to the next day and TT back to your original date, and a house plot will be already set up.

I don't know, my explanation is all over the place. Sorry about this. Hope this helped! (:

For what I want to add on, for the next day is better to create a new save file, enter with a new character with whatever name (not important) then see where the villagers had their plot on, sometimes they can land directly on top of your hybrid or bridge or town hall or even in front your house! So is better check it, and if dislike, close the game without saving and re-enter with new character, check the plot until it place on somewhere you satisfied, go to Isabelle, get a tent and save the game. Then delete the extra character and enter with your mayor.

PS: Do not enter immediately with your mayor or the game will be auto-saved. Then wherever the plot land on, you have to go through with it =x

Yes~ this is also quite important if you care for where you will want the villager's house placed so it won't ruin paths etc. (:~

Thanks for all the help. The whole creating another character to move the plot is something I'll pass on, if it is in an unsuitable place I'll just rebuild my town/bridge etc to make it work as I don't like resetting, time traveling etc, I just want to play the game without these as I consider them cheats (I don't care if others do it, it's just not for me).

I've agreed to take on Tank who seems like a cool character, I don't really have any dreamies, I just enjoy playing the game :)

I didn't read all the replies, but since you are at 8, you will get a ninth without doing anything. Within a few days, a plot will appear with some random animal. If you go and pick up another animal before that happens, you will get that animal and the 10th doesn't just automatically appear. You can be at 9 a long time, providing you don't pick up a voided animal somehow, but the game doesn't let you stay at 8 too long.
