Villager friendship ladder? How do I know a villager sees me as a “best friend”?

Do we know how the friendship ladder works in New Horizons, yet?

I’m interested to know if this game has friendship milestones, like in New Leaf.

So far, only Lolly has given me her picture, although quite a few villagers have asked me for special catchphrases and the like...

So, there is milestones for sure because I got the best friends achievement a couple of times. I have no idea the requirements of it though.

btw, since you've gotten a pic before, is it like in previous games where you get a question prompt and have to answer it correctly?

I hit one friendship nook miles milestone with Coach, but I haven't ever been prompted for catchphrases, minigames, or pictures with any of my villagers. I recieved a letter from Coach before I recieved the NM stamp.

I'm wondering if those are depending on personality at all?
I'm best friends with Genji (jock) and Flurry (normal).
For Genji, he had me to a treasure hunt minigame (once only) and he gave me a nickname.
For Flurry I was able to return a lost item to her (once) and catch her a bug (once).

I forgot about lost items. I've found lost items twice, and both times they belonged to Wendy, my peppy villager. No special milestones with her. I haven't personally seen correlation, but maybe.

I have at least 3 best friends (and have for days) according to my nook miles stamps, but I haven't changed any catchphrases or done any minigames! I also haven't gotten any pictures. I would like to know more.

Sometimes I wish we had the answers to these types of questions but it's also so nice to be able to discuss hypotheticals with others!
Maybe they thought these little interactions were annoying and made them more sparse?
I really like and miss them though.

Yeah, it's nice having this early period of speculation! I'm sure we'll eventually get definitive answers as datamining continues, but not yet. I actually really miss running errands for my neighbors. I can deal with the loss of diving and gyroids, but doing ridiculous things for Tangy was my favorite pastime despite it being silly at times and it's a shame that a core facet of the gameplay is gone.

I think she straight up gave it to me, and there wasn’t a quizlet attached as a requirement. I’ll report back if I get another villager picture.

Im apparently best friends with 3 of my villagers: rocket, cheri and midge. I havent really gotten anything special from them although rocket has tried to sell me clothes twice

Same thing happened to me... idk who I am even best friends with besides Lolly. :/

I've done the treasure hunt with Snake, Filbert keeps trying to sell me clothing, and Lolly has given me a nickname. I think I've hit with Cherry and/or Flora, but I don't know what triggers they had. I haven't received any pictures yet, either.

Hazel has given me a nickname, shortly after I got the 'best friends' achievement. This happened right after I gave her a loach which she LOVED. (She keeps it as a pet ;;w;; ) She also keeps trying to sell me clothes.

I got the achievement with Marcie after catching a flea off her. lol. No special interactions but she constantly sends me letters.

I've never been prompted to a minigame, I didn't even know they were in this game. Though Savannah asked me to find her a bug (once). I hated how common the hide and seek minigame was in NL, but with practically NO errands or multiple choice questions from villagers, villager interaction in this game is starting to feel hollow...

However, I'm *very* relieved to hear pictures from villagers are actually in this game because I adored this feature in WW. (Never actually got any in NL. Lol)

Flip and Peanut both tried to give me nicknames.

Flip also asked me to change his catchphrase, and I gave him a monkey-sounding one. Now, everyone is copying him...

I’ve become best friends with Agnes and Marina. No special interactions with Agnes, but Marina has sold me items and randomly tun up to me to give me clothes quite a bit. After I got their bff status they constantly mail me letters. No pictures, though
