Villager Appointments and Open Gates

This may be old news at this point(I'm not very good at keeping up with this stuff), but has anyone noticed that your villagers will cancel any appointments to visit you/have you visit them if you open up your town gate?

It's happened a few times before for me. I always schedule appointments for 7:30 pm, because even if I go out for the day I'm almost always home, fed, and playing by that time. On a couple occasions, I've had my friends come to my town for shenanigans, and while waiting for them to come over the villager that I've planned to meet up with tells me that "something came up" and they can't come over. Today, I scheduled a visit with Tia, only to later find out that I would, for once, be busy at that time. I opened my town gate, and talked to Tia. As I suspected, she cancelled the visit.

I can understand why they do it, of course, but is this a thing? Has it happened to anyone else?

I never tried it because I always forget my appointments so I end up not going to their house or letting them come over.

Aah, I've only had 1 villager cancel on me, and then I had someone round and it was only 5 minutes until they were supposed to come round. If it's anytime this is really useful then, free cancellation, no dissappointment. ~ Will stop me irrationally demanding I brind my 3DS out with me and play it at a specific time because I can't bear to let Zell down, and I accidentally set it to pm instead of am that morning.
