The news that Left 4 Dead 2 will be effectively banned in Australia came as a shock to the folks at developer Valve, VP of marketing Doug Lombardi has told Shacknews.

"We were surprised to hear of this news yesterday," the executive informed us. "Obviously, everyone at Valve is pretty bummed."

Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to classify Left 4 Dead 2 due to its "realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence" and gore, effectively banning the zombie shooter sequel as unrated games cannot be sold down under by law.

"It would be a shame if folks in Australia, or anywhere else, are unable to purchase Left 4 Dead 2 because of a ratings issue," Lombardi lamented.

Well now I'm glad my sister doesn't ALWAYS get her own way because we'd be living in Australia.

That's a good thing too...
You wouldn't be able to buy L4D2. ;D
First though... you need that new graphics card.

But damn, that's crazy

I read this a couple of days ago and the Australian government are complete morons, they shouldn't be allowed to wrap the entire country in wool to shield them from violence.

It's happened elsewhere too with other games...
*Points at England*
Remember when Manhunt 2 was coming out?
Then it wasn't, then it was, then is was banned completely...
And now you can go to any major game store and buy it.

Basically, all *censored.3.0*ed up.

Even with say a high age rating for it, kids that want the game get their parents to buy it.
That is never going to change. No matter what game it is.

Couldn't people still import the game? Or would the region coding prevent them from doing so? That is really stupid, to ban a game. Get the stick outta your butt Australia.

I guess that happened but Manhunt 2 had excessive violence, ALOT more then L4D. Killing HUMANS with plastic bags, crowbars, baseball bats etc.

I mean, you're killing "Zombies" in L4D not humans. So I don't see what the big deal is to be honest.

Oh yeah, granted it happened with Manhunt, that was explicite stuff.
L4D2 will just have a bit more gore than the first one, which wasn't alot anyway.
Shooting off a limb, or seeing blood spray about, really that was the gore from L4D.

Well, we'll see, and hope they lift this stupid ban.

I think they could from England. As they are both PAL region.
Not too sure if it'd work with xbox 360s though.

They made a censored version of L4D for Germany, so they can probably just do the same thing...
Oh right, that's fair enough then.
Then seems like they are *censored.4.1* about nothing.
That's a thing with most games with gore, there is usually an option to turn it off, or like down.

They also censored the original Half Life. Instead of dying, the aliens sat down and put their head in their hands.

Also, sucks for Australia.

Haha, wow.
Poor aliens. They know they did wrong, but you made them sad with your crowbar.
