Upgrading the shop.

So to upgrade the shop do you have to just spend X amount in there, or does selling things there count too? I always end up just using re-tail so I think I'm missing out on the upgraded shops by selling there instead. Unless selling doesn't count towards it.

I don't think selling counts towards it, just buying. Stationery, fortune cookies, and wrapping paper doesn't count, though.
