I know you need to spend a certain amount of bells, but does that amount include things you order through the catalog?

I'm tempted to buy a golden crown so i spend the amount required - but i want to make sure it counts first

It does. I've heard a couple people say they bought a few expensive items like the black katana and it worked.

I believe it does. Mine upgraded after I went to my friends town and bought 3 items from her town.
