Update Data button: Just for items?

When starting Animal Crossing, there's a button down the bottom saying "Update Data".

I'm guessing its just for items, not big updates like a new villager or new projects to be built.

Does anyone know what the button will actually do.

It's there for if the game ever received a patch.
