Turnips Just Confuse Me.

I hear that some people make tons of Bells by selling turnips. But how does it really work? It was so much simpler in Wild World for me, but when New Leaf released I started to get confused. I want to sell turnips for a high price, but I can't really do it if I don't understand how to sell the turnips "properly" in the first place.
Could anyone please explain this? Also, how many turnips do you recommend buying, and is there a certain price limit for you?

I use like 1,000,000 bells and buy until I have no more. I watch threads on the Train Station, Re-Tail, and tumblr to see high prices. The lowest I've sold for them is 545.
