Ok, so I got the bundle when it came out the game, scanner, and starter pack then when I picked it up that week I got like 5 more booster packs of five we didn't have any larger ones at the gamestop. But I haven't had time, just finishing a New Leaf quest and a lot of life stuff to start yet. So as a late new starter looking for advice and info about the game and the best way to go about it, and any opinions on card collecting. If you like it or were disappointed, and any other little things you wish you had known or I hold be prepared for starting up or may want to look I to as far as card collecting.
Basically opinions now that it is out and anything you wish you'd known starting out.
The cards are a fun little extra but arent necessary for gameplay of HHD. Theyre super fun to collect and there will be multiple series with 100 diff cards each time. If you like to collect things id say go for it but otherwise its not 100% necessary to enjoy the game. As for collecting, the trade community here on this forum is really nice and filled with traders; but there is also a reddit subforum i believe for trading which you can also use.
So does that mean you can see a certain villager without their card or no..you say not necessary but I thought you could only see play with villagers whose card you found is that correct?

You'll eventually get all the villagers without cards, but the special characters you needs cards for (Isabelle etc). It's just that you can call that villager right away if you have a card instead of waiting for them to show up in the plaza.
The amiibo animal crossing toys work in HHD. Cyrus toy worked and I was able to design a house for him/Reese.
All the other ones work so you wouldn't need special character if you collect those toys.
Another place to trade cards is the ACC board. Trades there and at Bell Tree were quick.

That's cool; thanks for posting about that . I was hoping maybe they'd have a special item (like the villager one did) or did something special for HHD. That makes me happy since I had my mom pick me up the Cyrus 3-pack, and Tom nook and Mabel.
- Let you get the villager and their items faster than you would in-game. You can get all of the regular villagers without the cards in-game though. You just have to wait for them to appear.
- Let you invite an animal over to a particular place. Keep in mind that if you invite them over with amiibo they don't talk. This is mainly useful for people who want to set up scenes and taking pictures.
- Let you set an animal a role in one of the buildings. For example, you can have them as a shopkeeper in one of your shops all the time. Otherwise the game will randomly assign roles every single day in game.
The special character cards do this:
- Let you design a house for the special character. You can't normally do this in-game. You also can get a few items you can't normally get in-game by doing this, like their picture and Isabelle has a scooter.
- Let you invite them over to a particular place. It works the same as with regular villagers.
- Keep in mind that different cards of the same special character aren't treated as a new character. They will just let you change the default outfit of the character. So far this is true for Isabelle (series 1 version = summer outfit, series 2 version = winter outfit) and KK Slider (series 1 version = DJ KK outfit, series 2 = regular KK slider outfit). You can't design another house for them or get new items if you have both versions.
Despite the special characters being arguably more useful for the game (since it's adding in characters you don't normally have access to), they are less rare than regular villagers. There are 17 special characters per series and 1 comes in each pack. There's 83 regular villagers per series and either 2 (Europe and Japan) or 5 (North America) come in each pack. As a result, it's harder to collect all of the regular villagers than it is to collect the special characters.
As for the amiibo figures, they work the same as the cards for the respective character. Some of the figures don't have cards yet, so it's a way to design houses for them faster.
Figures that don't have a card yet, even in Japan:
- Mabel
- Cyrus
and the upcoming figures:
- Rover
- Blathers
- Celeste
There's a Timmy/Tommy amiibo coming out at some point. We don't know how that will work for HHD. Timmy and Tommy are actually separate amiibo cards even though this figure has them combined as one.
Other interesting to know facts:
- The Villager amiibo unlocks the gold villager statue in HHD.
- There's so far 4 limited edition cards. There's a set of 3 limited edition cards of Goldie, Rosie, and Stitches that you can get with amiibo Festival. They work the same as their regular cards, but the characters are wearing explorer hats on these special cards. There's also a Japan only Isabelle card that came with a magazine. I don't know if it does anything different in game (don't think so), but the card has Isabelle in a slightly different pose.
I don't have any cards yet other than the one my game came with, TBH. I'm just a nerd about learning these things. ^_^;;
