Tools Guide for New Players

Axe
Costs 400 bells at the gardening store. Can be used to chop down trees. Breaks after 32 uses.
Fishing Rod
Costs 500 bells at the Nookling Junction. Can be used to catch fish in rivers, lakes, and beaches.
Hammer
Rarely sold at the Island gift shop for 10 medals. Can be used to hit villagers and make them angry.
Megaphone
Costs 500 bells at the T&T Mart (an upgrade of the Nookling Junction). Can be used to call other villagers in the town.
Net
Costs 500 bells at the Nookling Junction. Can be used to catch bugs around town.
Shovel
Costs 500 bells at the Nookling Junction. Can be used to dig up buried items (marked by a star mark) and to hit rocks.
Slingshot
Costs 500 bells at the T&T Mart. Can be used to shoot down floating balloons.
Timer
Costs 500 bells at the T&T Mart. Can be used to start a timer for a creature-catching mini-game (pretty useless if you don't have a friend visiting).
Tweeter
Obtained from the Happy Home Showcase after Streetpassing ten times. Can be used to spread little papers around in the air.
Watering Can
Costs 500 bells at the gardening store or you can get it from Isabelle after completing her tips. Can be used to water wilting flowers and bring them back to life.
Wet Suit
Sometimes sold at the Island gift shop for 40 medals. Can be used to swim in water and catch aquatic creatures. Many different colors are sold, some being rarer than others.
Throwing Beans
Costs 800 bells at the Nookling Junction on Bean Day or get them by talking to Harvey when he is feeding the birds. Can be used to feed the birds at the campsite or to throw beans at villagers.​

The megaphone is super helpful when villagers pull a Houdini on you after asking a favor. Also it's one of the few things you get to do with your microphone.

Pro tip: if you have a bubble wand or are holding a dandelion you can "blow" it but blowing into your mic!
