Tom Nook is your biggest supporter in the series. No one cares about you and your well being like he does.
From the start of Animal Crossing (GameCube) he gives you a house before he even meets you. He doesn’t charge rent, he gives you a price and when you say you don’t have it, he lets you work for him to pay off the first debt. Work is basically meet your villager friends, plant flowers, deliver packages etc. just basically helping you get used to the town. And you know, same for City Folk and Wild World. I’d say New Horzions too? In New Leaf you don’t exchange services for the house but he still doesn’t MAKE you pay.
not paying off the rent has NO consequences- No interest, no due date, no penalties. When you do pay it, he gets it done overnight.
Timmy and Tommy are prettt known in the fandom for being his nephews but that actually is not true! They’re orphans that he raised. They look up to him and see him as their hero. AND, he pays them for their work.
Sable and Tom Nook have a history. They grew up in the same town, the two were super close, they shared their dreams and aspirations together and Tom had a dream to open the biggest store in the world. He grew up, moved to the city to start accomplishing his dream. His job didn’t pay well, but he bought Sable a fancy pair of scissors for her birthday. Sable wished for his pure spirit to be protected, but that didn’t wind up happening.
His business partner (Redd) basically took everything he had, forcing Tom back to the town he just left from. The trauma made him different towards everyone, he wasn’t as friendly, his mindset changed from ‘dreams before money,” to “dreams are nothing in the face of money!” Which was never his mindset.
When he tells you about his past himself, he asks you to please forget about it afterward. You’re young, you’re ambitious, he doesn’t want you to also adapt the mindset he has. He sees the drive he once had in you.
Hes anything but cruel to you and now that he’s in a more stable place he wants you to grow too. I see people say that he doesn’t pay for anything so he’s still greedy or whatever. Ignoring game mechanics, I believe this is him wanting you to understand how the adult world works without the cruelty that he faced. The only thing he won’t buy from you is literal garbage. Bugs? Fruit? Seashells? He’ll take all of that so you have some money. You have no bells? You don’t have to worry about rent either.
Mr Tom Nook is misrepresented, mistreated, and people need to understand this!! I LOVE YOU TOM NOOK!
