Bells

Hi alls! Considering fans are still waiting to receive New Leaf, here's a LATE Face Guide thread for people that haven't started their game yet.

Now due to my excitement, I jumped started on New Leaf w/out reading the manual. Here are some handy tips I picked up:

1. The LEFT & Right DIRECTIONAL buttons will quick-equip any tools & parasols you have in your inventory. Necessary especially when capturing the spider for instance! Pressing DOWN will unequip any items you're holding- allowing you to shake trees.

2. If the store fails to stock the fishing pole after a couple of days- why wait? Speak to your assistant & complete the FIRST dialogue sequence pertaining to "What can I do to make myself happy here?" or something like that. Once again, it is the FIRST selection from the top of a list which also includes observations on "Annoying Neighbors," "Redesigning the Town Flag," etc. She will eventually sell you a fishing pole for $500 Bells & gift you a watering can.

3. Letters (purchased @ the store) after you address it & input any text at all will be placed in a "Draft Folder" found in your inventory. If you're short on item slots, w/ the exceptions of insects & fish, you can use a letter to store a single item. Additionally, the locker in the train station is a clone of the storage furniture at your home- this is particularly useful when you're selling/storing goods since the station's closer to the store/museum.

4. Once a day you can:

A- shake random trees for $100 Bells per tree. (beehives are $400 Bells each, I think)
B- shake 2 trees for 1x piece of furniture each.
C- w/ a shovel, break a single boulder granting you a gemstone.
D- w/ a shovel, earn Bells by repeatedly striking a random boulder. This is TIMED; therefore, you should first dig a hole BEHIND where your character will stand as each strike will push him/her further away from the unique boulder. Should you strike it once & walk away, you will need to wait another day to try again.
E- w/ a shovel, look for the "x" marks on the ground & unearth 4x Fossils to sell or donate. The (1x) pitseed are useless, however.

5. How to earn 100% Approval Rating:

*A- Procure the starter house (not sure if paying it off plays a role, but I did so).
*B- Design a new flag. (@ Mayor's Office)
*C- Mix a new sound theme for the town. (@ Mayor's Office)
*D- Donate a fossil to the Museum.
*E- Make a statement on the Bulletin Board.
*F- Sell an item to Re-Tail.
G- Complete quests for neighbors.
H- Pull all the weeds.
I- Pickup & send all trash to Re-Tail.
J- Water EVERY flower.
K- Write letters w/ a gift inside for each neighbor, including the new resident. (mailed @ Post Office)

*Note: As pointed out by Mint (Thanks!) some of these actions obviously affect your Approval Rating only once.

Please add (& correct me) on other tips for new & veteran AC fans!

6. The best time for fishing right now is night, but when Re-Tail is still open. There are a ton of sharks out. I was regularly getting 50,000 bells per load to Re-Tail.

I also have a tip the fish never bite more then 5 times so if your fish is going for the 5th bit be ready also you can sell your bee hives at retail for 1000 bells if you put them on display instead of directly selling them.

Approval rating (from the Japanese wiki):

Change Town Tune 3 points Only once
Flag change 3 points Only once
Write to bulletin board 3 points Only once
Sell to Re-Tail 3 points Only once
And donated to the museum 7 points Only once
In other pay taking over garbage 1 point / one Any number of times I get to take back the boots, such as empty cans and in the R ? Pakazu
I watered the flower 3 points
Complete villager tasks 3 points / 1 person Once one person
I talk with residents of other villages 3 points / 1 person Once one person

Only once = once per day
1 person= I believe it's once per villager

7. Early on, if you don't have the slingshot but a net and you see a balloon attached to a present floating by, don't panic! Head to your town's cliff to the ocean and wait for the balloon to drift there. (If it already passed the ocean cliff and is headed towards the mountainy side of your town, your out of luck.) When it gets to the cliff, it should lower enough for you to smack the balloon with your net. Pick up your present at the bottom of the cliff.

Woah really? Thanks for that tip mr_jamps! I missed 3 of them and I was getting frustrated.

Tip: Talk to Sable every day in the tailor shop to eventually unlock the QR machine.

This is great!

Can I just point out, in the OP is states that at the end of the money rock tip 'Strike it once and walk away.' This could confuse some players!

^ Reece should give you that option when you try to sell an item that is re-sellable (i.e. not bugs and fish etc), but I'm not that far in yet so can't say the options to pick just yet. I've yet to gain furniture to be able to sell

How do you put them on display?

tigereyes is correct; there should be open displays @ Re-Tail where there's no furniture (again, clothes & house items are fine- just nothing live). Click on it space & Reece will initiate a dialogue asking if you want to sell the item & on your decided price.

Thank you Datsu for the correction!

I actually just put a t-rex skull on display at Re-Tail O.o
I'm not sure if they'll buy it, I think they will, but if they do I'll report back to let everyone know. If they do, that's awesome haha, get some extra money from fossils too =)

Here's some I found:
1) Gems/ore (also other items) can be sold to neighbors (flea market) a lot more than just flat out selling it.
Example: Emerald sells at 2,000 bells (1/4 of full price). Prima guide lists it value at 8,000 bells. Tried selling it at 8,000 but was too high, my neighbor happily bought it for 6,000.
*note: you may want to save gems/ore to redecorate certain items.

2)Having trouble with finned fish bites? Close your eyes and listen for the bite. Imo the sound comes before the bobber drops also it eases nerves and lessens mistakes.

3)Sell to retail instead of the nook stores, retail pays a bit more.

Haha, I thought I was the only person who did this :P I don't close my eyes per se, but I look away from the screen and go on my laptop for a second (ususally refreshing the forums) xD

I can't find anymore weeds to pull but Isabelle keeps telling me to do it! :(

For approval rating? If so that's just general tips to increase it. It goes something like: weed, do favors for neighbors (try to get all of them to ask of something), mail a letter, fish trash out of the water and recycle at retail, sell something at retails through the flea market.

Do your actions on day one contribute towards the approval rating you need to get starting day two?

As soon as you're appointed Mayor, I can think of no reason why your Approval Rating isn't already in motion. Good luck!

This helps a lot because I saw a gift floating around and had no clue what to do. Thanks!
