I think they are aimed at 2 different kind of audiences.
A freemium game on an iphone can provide hours of enjoyment for free to people that would not normally play games.
I spent lots of hours on candy crush saga, and I never spent anything. Then they offer you the option to buy lives or powerups if you are really impatient and want to move on.
I don't like the obvious "pay to win" though. And games you actually pay for, but that have obviously had some content cut off so that they could make some extra money out of selling it as downloadable content you pay for (Katamari for Xbox I am looking at you).
