To make it simple, Animal Crossing is really just a sandbox game, you can do whatever you want, customizing your town is it's strongest point.

It's like Life in a video game. You move into a house, you talk to the other people in your town, buy things, decorate your house, pay off debts so you can keep getting a larger house, getting new characters to move into your town, collecting items, going fishing, catching bugs, etc...
