What is the deal with "dreamies"? I never saw any signs of this phenomenon with previous versions of Animal Crossing. As I understand it, people trade for their favorite villagers then keep them permanently. Why? Isn't part of the fun having new villagers move in so you can get to know them all? Doesn't it get boring seeing the same 9 or 10 villagers month after month? I would hate that!

What is the deal with people who reset their towns thousands of times for days and weeks on end to get a "perfect" map? That seems like craziness to me - I started playing with the first map that popped up when I first turned on the game and I've come to love it. Why on earth would people throw away months of progress because they don't like the pattern on their grass, or where they built their police station, or they have peaches but want oranges? Seriously? Jeesh!

The tedium of creating new characters and resetting hundreds of times to get a villager to move exactly where people want them to must be maddening! I just built PWP's near my paths to keep them off and they can move wherever else they want. The randomness of the game is part of it's appeal - who will move in next? Will they live near the beach or north of the river? Who knows? Who cares?

All this obsessive behavior diminishes the game on so many levels. Can't people just play it the way it was supposed to be played?

Part of the fun of Animal Crossing is that there are so many ways to play it. Some people have fun resetting for that perfect layout and going above and beyond to get their dream villagers, and some people just go with the flow. I'm definitely in that second category. I wish I had enough patience to make my town ultra-perfect, but I'm the kind of person that runs all over the place.

I think I get where you're coming from, and someone's way of playing might not be your cup of tea, but it works for them. It's pretty interesting seeing how everyone plays in my opinion. That's just my two cents, though. ^^

People can play how they want , It's not your game. You shouldnt be worried how other's play , I have a town full of my dreamies and I have never gotten bored.

Everyone want's there own style , They'll reset if something doesn't look right, don't have the right map etc. You have to deal with it because that's what the AC community do.

People CARE about where their villager's are placed , People WILL reset as many times as they please , I spent 45 resets for Katt.

Why do people have problems with how others play their game? That's something I don't understand.

Why do you get to decide what way the game is supposed to be played?

Different people enjoy different things. They're playing the game the way *they* find fun, which is pretty much the point of a casual game like AC.

Dreamies were never a phenomenon because you couldn't invite villagers from another town to yours in previous versions. I have dreamies, when I previously hadn't, but I don't have 10. I'd never have 10. There's certain villagers that may be nostalgic to others, (Stitches comes to mind for me), and some people would like new and different villagers to New Leaf in their town.

I'm one person who has reset their town, in the past, quite a few times. Some people like getting a good town at the start, making sure they'll stick with it forever. Personally, I wouldn't want a really ugly map (in my opinion) and had to be stuck with it forever, because I'd be hell for me.
I reset for circle grass. I don't regret it. I hate square grass, and don't mind triangle grass.
I didn't care for fruit, I just didn't want pears or peaches. The Police Station is permanent. If you placed it really inconveniently, it wouldn't help the progress of your town at all.

I don't reset to get a villager move where I want. Heck, even Stitches moved on my path and I worked around it, but once again, it could be inconvenient for others.

There isn't a specific way for AC to be played. You play it how you like. If people want to reset a lot to get square grass, I don't care! It doesn't bother me. Someone's perspective of a perfect town, who resets their town for a map they think is perfect, is probably different to yours.

I think dreamies are more apparent in this game because of how accessible they are now. I don't see anything wrong with that. :)

Agreeing with the posters above me regarding "how the game is supposed to be played"
In my opinion it's supposed to be played however you want to play it; If that means restarting for a town they love, resetting for villager locations and maintaining 10 of their favorite villagers, why not? It's their way of having fun in AC, not yours.

While I do admit resetting your town to get the "perfect" map is ridiculous, it's how people want to play.
I do have dreamies and I have basically all of them now, I think it adds another aim to the game to get all of the villagers you want.
I also do the reset trick when I know a new villager is moving in because it makes me so mad if they ruin any hybrids, paths, or spaces I just didn't want a villager to be. :3

This.

Pretty much as stated, the point of Animal Crossing is to play it your way and at your own pace. Everyone has their own different gameplay, and I still enjoy playing as when I started five months ago in July. I reset over 100 times to find my perfect town, still look for my dream villagers, and attempt to place my villager's houses in specific spots and still enjoy the game. I don't find it very stressing at all and my work put into my town actually pays off later on for me. Just like I don't time travel anymore, others still do and I am perfectly okay with that because that is the way they play the game. :)

Going to be speaking on terms of myself, here. I completely hate when people think there is a right and wrong way to play this game. Who are you to decide how anyone should play? That's right - nobody. You cannot tell anyone how to play their game. That aside, I reset my town for months trying to get a good layout because I like the beauty of everything being symmetrical. I like everything to be how I plan it out to be. If I want perfect oranges and I end up with cherries as a town fruit, you're damn right I will be hitting that home button and resetting. I want circle grass because I can't stand the other grass shapes. I have to have a blue station, because the others are blindingly ugly to me. Does it even matter why I do these things? It shouldn't. You should be worried about how you play your own game.

Dreamies have come into play because 1.) there are tons of new cute villagers and 2.) you can finally invite them from other towns to live in your town. Now, I can't stand inviting villagers from other towns because they sing their old town tunes non-stop. So I get fresh new ones via the reset trick. I have spent four days trying to get a villager once, yes, and I do not regret that one bit. Once I get a town full of animals that I absolutely love and are not a pain in the ass to look at every day, I do not reset any more. All the hair ripping anger of resetting is done because I now have a perfect village. Then I move on to landscaping. This does not degrade my gameplay whatsoever.

Good day and Merry Christmas.

Hehe, that description is pretty much exactly how I like to play my game. Well, I'll explain why I like to play the way I do:

On dream neighbors:
Actually, I had dream neighbors in Wild World too! And some of my Wild World WiFi friends had dream neighbors, and I even helped them get some of 'em! There were even threads on ACC and AXA dedicated to villager trading for Wild World. Back then you couldn't invite villagers to move to your town, so you'd have to do this thing called "ninth slot" trading. I guess it's just a lot more popular in New Leaf now that it's made simpler to understand, and easier to do, to give each other villagers.

I like the idea of having permanent neighbors because it feels more like a stable town to me without villagers moving in and out. I know someone who has had the same 8 villagers in her Wild World town for years, and still loves all of them -- and her town -- to pieces! She says things like "I'm finally going to beat Bob in the Flower Fest this year, he's won two years in a row" and I just think that sounds like such a wonderful, adorable, tight community. It doesn't get "boring" -- I mean, as long as you have all the personality types, you're not even really missing much of anything (in terms of dialogue, at least). It's nice to have familiar faces, animals you've grown close to over time, and imagine that they've even grown close to each other, too!

On resetting for the perfect town:
I think this can get out of hand if you're too picky and have way too many requirements, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to have a town that you like and that you're confident you'll be happy with forever. I personally feel more comfortable settling into a town if I know that it wasn't just the first random thing that the game gave me, but rather, I selectively picked out for certain reasons (fruit, layout, etc.). It feels less strange to me starting out, and feels like I've found my "home."

On house resetting:
Unlike past games, where villagers could only move in certain spots that made sense, they can now move literally anywhere there's enough space. Obviously some people would prefer it if villagers didn't move right on top of their hybrids, or right in front of their front door or town hall, so they choose to reset to make sure villagers land in a spot that they like.

I dealt with my first 10 neighbors moving in wherever they wanted, and didn't use the reset trick on them. I was really unhappy with my town at that point, with all the houses sprawled randomly everywhere in the way of where I wanted to put paths or build projects. It took months to finally get some of them moved out, and finally get my town looking more the way I like it, so there's no way I'd risk ruining what I've worked hard for by going back to letting random chance determine everything!

All this obsessive behavior diminishes the game on so many levels. Can't people just play it the way it was supposed to be played?

If you have a problem with it then don't play that way and let others do what they want with their games. Problem solved. If I want to have everything just so, that's my prerogative. I personally wouldn't have fun if I had to readjust my path 100 times to suit villagers I didn't like randomly moving in, but I won't sit here and judge someone who likes playing that way by adding in "Jeesh!" or a paraphrased version of "Why can't you play MY way?!" because frankly the way you play doesn't concern me at all. If you like what you're doing, keep at it!

The game can be played in many ways and what works for one person will not work for another.
Variety is the spice of life. I like the way I play and shake my head at some of the things I read, but I respect everyones right to play how they want :)

I get where your coming from. But...its their game. Why does it matter to you if someone resets their town 100+ times? I don't think it affects you. I agree that it's a little crazy lol. I'd never reset over my layout/map. It's what I started with and I love it just the way it is. Dreamies can change. Part of the fun of animal crossing is changing villagers, but if you have favorites why let them go? Not everyone gets bored. There's different ways to play, and getting every little thing you want just the way you want it is rewarding to some people. I bet other people wonder why you WOULDN'T reset for a layout or villagers lol. I don't, but because I like little surprises in game as well.

I don't understand how people can get tired of having the same villagers.
A snooty villager is going to be exactly the same as another snooty villager.
It's the same dang thing. I picked out certain villagers because of the way they look.
That is really the only difference between villagers.

Why have villagers that I hate when I can have ones that I love?
Sometimes I do miss having enemies but I just play in my Population Growing town and beat Monique to death.

I've only ever had to reset MAYBE 10 times max to place a plot. I'm not THAT picky, I just don't want a house nudged right up against another permanent villager's, or in the way of a PWP or a path. Not that hard. I also picked one of the starting town layouts and stuck with it, but I do have "dreamies", because I don't like all the characters! There are plenty I like and would love to hang onto for a while, but I don't think it's that farfetch'd to have an ideal "final" set of villagers.

Two sum it all up in a simple way: Different people, different tastes and preferences. That is all.

People play a game however they want, it's like questioning why someone does video gaming/sport/drawing/other stuff seriously.
They all got their own reasons, and if that's how they find the the game to be enjoyable, then so be it.
After all, the core point of video games is that they are enjoyable and fun.
Asides from getting your cash two that is eheheh.

Like I'm a competitive Smasher, and I tend to 100% games I enjoy like Kid Icarus: Uprising.
But I take New Leaf lightly, I know I could TT, reset house plots and all.
But I let everything go naturally while still aiming for the gold medals and prepping up my home for Streetpass, and making my town look pretty decent.

eh i'm guilty of a lot of this but yeah i agree

having too much control is maddening and it's actually made me hate my town weirdly

It's really nice to hear that someone takes AC lightly but admits to being more serious about other games! Obviously, I think we're all a bit like this :)
