Thieves... Not a blacklist

Has anyone ever had someone come to your town and steal from you? I'm grumpy about it, so I'm venting. Someone came to my town and stole from me... I trusted this person and often let them free roam in my town.

Yes, I know meeting people on the island is risky and I should screen them heftily, but I was under the impression that she was a grownup gamer like me and would be trustworthy. I'm not a very confrontational person at all, so I haven't asked her about it. I even went back and forth thinking about whether or not to delete this person, but have just done it.

I breed large amounts of hybrids, so of course I wouldn't notice some from the large patches go missing. However, this person took some from where I line my paths and some of the new hybrids I just started breeding, so they are extremely noticeable now that they are missing.

Ugh, I know this is long, but what do you all think or have experienced? I've deleted the person and probably won't let anyone free roam my town for a while.

This is why I would never just let a stranger wander around my town if I have anything valuable sitting around. Only friends I know personally and can trust. It seems silly to invite an unfamiliar person to your town, then just be like "lol okay go have fun." and expect them not to steal. If anyone has business in my town, I escort them to wherever they need to go.

That really sucks, sorry that happened to you
I'm not *super* careful about who I let roam around my town, but have been lucky so far in that no one has stolen anything from me. I would be disheartened, too.
This is also adding to the reasons I haven't bothered applying to Club Tortimer yet XD

I didn't fully explain.......... I chauffeured them around at least 3 times before this and we had been "friends" for at least 2 weeks. They had visited my town on multiple occasions and I never found anything missing. I would also visit other friends while she was there. I know of the wifi switch and have been showing a stranger around when they bolt so i hit the switch. I'm an adult and hope not to be so naive as to let someone visit and roam free on the first visit. Also, being 26 with kids, I don't have ANY friends who play animal crossing at all. I went to AWA-CON to find some this year... not a single person. So my only way of finding friends is through forums now, although I used to use the island.

That really sucks, I'm sorry that it happened to you. I don't think it's your fault at all. People shouldn't steal, and even when there are precautions you can take, there are still people who do it. Plus, from what you've said, it sounds like you got to know the person and had had good experiences playing with them, so I don't know how you could have guessed they were going to steal from you after all. Even something like meeting someone with good feedback from TBT is riskier than that since you have no actual experience of playing with that person before.

I hope you end up getting some new hybrids, and that your next experiences inviting people to your town are better.

It really is awful that people do that, and very unfair. It should alert you if people have picked up things.

I have met two very nice adults from the Island.I did the same as you.I would give them a few tours of my town and visit their town before i let them roam on their own.I trusted these people and luckily they respected my town.I am very sorry that happened to you.This theif gained your trust then stole from you.People like that make it hard to enjoy the online play and then we stop trusting people.It's such a shame that others can ruin the fun for others.

Thank you all. I guess it's a live and learn type of thing. I still have people who I trust on my list. Another thing is, that person is friends with a really good player I play with. I noticed my friend's post on another forum about stealing recently. It has just clicked! I introduced the thief to her and now hybrids have been going missing in her town. She has a lot of other people to come and cycle through her town and hasn't been able to pin point who it is. How do I tell her about this without sounding too gossipy?
