Even Nintendo has done something similar in a way. There's an amiibo card of Lottie both with and without her makeup and they kinda made her without makeup look a bit more depressing? I don't know how to describe it. But it really sends the wrong message whether or not they were intentional in doing so.
I mean what was the point of the gray bow? Feels highly suspicious to me
I can see it as they're sprucing up the graphics because they're coming to a large screen, so they're able to add more detail, one being highlights in her eyes in the pictures on the left. Her eyes were too tiny for highlights in the image on the right. The gray bow was just kind of gray and dull, changing it to blue again adds more detail and makes Lottie pop.

lottie has always looked like that, though. she has separate models in her debut game (HHD) with and without makeup. it doesn't have anything to do with updating the graphics. if you look at the card numbers, the makeup-less card is newer.
i don't think they were trying to insult lottie by making her look like that in her makeup-less card, but yeah, it is a little weird how they make the makeup thing like...a character trait of hers. i don't get the point of making her bow gray either...

If you look at the cards the one on the left is for version 1 of the amiibo cards. The second is for version 3. She debuted as wearing makeup. If you use either card in the Roost she will show up with or without makeup depending which you use. It still doesn't explain why they had to change her bow to being a duller gray color.
It feels a bit aimed if you ask me. Japan has always had an air of sexism. I got tired of seeing one of the girls in Naruto always talk about how she was hopeless cause she didn't get married in her 20s or maybe it was her 30s. And she would dote on any male that gave her the slightest bit of attention or niceties. There was also a girl in One Piece that behaved the same way.

It does make me wonder if there will ever be new villagers that are just as.... aesthetically lacking.. as say, Rodney or Hazel. I don't care for the way Raymond looks but I think I'm in the minority there.
I feel like people might complain at Nintendo if new villagers aren't super pretty or super cute or super cool
O’Hare makes me extremely uncomfortable because of the shade of brown he is. Every single time I see a picture of him, I immediately think of blackface and I get very uncomfortable. I know it’s unintentional and if he was a lighter tan or a sepia I think he’d be fine but the shade he is just is unfortunate.
The only Villagers I think are ugly are Ursula (her hair is absolutely dreadful to look at!), Wart Jr before NL (still don’t like him because I think he’s extremely rude), Beardo, and all of the Gorillas minus Violet and Rilla. I don’t like how the Gorilla characters are designed. Their lips look really off putting and they most don’t come off as being cute or lovable looking.

I recall at one point running into Hans while villager hunting and ending up not taking him then kicked myself for a good while because I hadn't. I think the 'abominable snowman' is pretty cute really.

I see what you mean--kind of orange there, matches up to his shirt. It's funny how a little detail like that can be off-putting; I'm the same way with some things and try not to be but usually that doesn't work because the thing will just keep bugging me.

SEE THAT'S HOW I FEEL ABOUT BAROLD!! the way his lips are drawn reminds me of like, old minstrel cartoons and i know that it's not SUPPOSED to be like that but i can't reconcile with it. it genuinely might just be me though (in fact i kinda hope it is, or at least that i'm in the minority) because i've never ever seen anyone say this about barold. it's a shame because bear cubs are my favorite and it's sad there has to be one i dislike so much.
i personally think o'hare is fine, it's not like brown bunnies don't exist in real life (i have a brown bunny myself, though she's not that shade). but i kinda get where you're coming from. like, i don't really see it, but depending on whatever circumstances you first saw him in i understand getting unfortunate associations and not being able to unsee it.

yeah that's what i think too. i think animal crossing is more in the spotlight than it's ever been, or at least it was when new horizons first released. so each newly introduced villager has to be something people get hyped about, and they can't have fun with designing a villager who's off-putting or weird looking or otherwise ugly because people won't be hyped about it.
a lot of new villagers (not all of them, but a noticeable amount) are a very, like...pastel uwu cute soft aesthetic. and i personally don't DISLIKE those (i think megan falls into that category and i love her! sasha too!), but i definitely think they are pandering to those who prioritize aesthetic in their towns, which is also why this game has so much more focus on terraforming and decoration.
i can't imagine they anticipated, uh...That reaction to raymond, though.
^ People will always complain if some 'cute' or 'ugly' villager gets in the next game. A lot of fans were begging for Sonic to be added to Smash. This is way back before Brawl. Then Sonic finally was announced to be in Brawl and guess what? You would've thought that everyone was always against the idea with the amount of comments that were being posted. You can't please everyone.
